Chapter 1 - The Tail of the Blue Sedan"Keep a safe distance, Walter, but do not lose sight of that blue sedan," Claire instructed, her voice trembling slightly as she handed the driver a fifty-dollar bill.

Walter looked in the rearview mirror, meeting her intense gaze. The gray-haired driver nodded once, his demeanor shifting from casual to focused. "Got it. No sudden moves, no tailgating. Let's see where this gentleman thinks he's sneaking off to."

The sedan ahead maneuvered through the mid-morning traffic, taking the interstate heading north toward the upscale harbor district of Maple Ridge—far away from the Northgate Neurology Center. Claire's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every mile they traveled tore another piece away from the illusion she had built and defended for over two decades.

Mark hadn't seen a doctor in months. He hadn't suffered from debilitating headaches that required experimental $120,000 treatments. The pieces clicked into a horrifying mosaic in her mind: the forged medical bills, the sudden need for a massive bank loan using her family home as collateral, the secret phone calls, and the lingering scent of expensive perfume.

He isn't sick, she thought, her fingernails digging deep into her palms. He’s living a double life, funded by my sweat, my second jobs, and my mortgaged future.

The blue sedan took an exit toward the exclusive Marina View condominiums—a luxury complex where penthouses sold for millions and private security gates kept the outside world away. Walter slowed his vehicle, pulling over beneath the shade of an oak tree a block away from the security gate.

Mark’s car glided smoothly through the entrance as the automatic arm raised for his key fob. He already had access.

"Well, looks like our friend has a VIP pass," Walter murmured, glancing back at Claire. "What's the play now, boss?"

Claire leaned forward, staring at the sleek, glass-fronted tower where the car had disappeared. "Wait for me right here," she said, her voice turning ice-cold. "I'm going inside."
