Mark Bennett sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair unkempt and his skin pale. He refused to look toward the gallery where Claire sat alongside her son and Eleanor, who had recovered enough to attend in a wheelchair.
Dr. Vanessa Cole sat at a separate table with her defense attorney, looking defeated and humiliated.
The judge’s gavel struck the wood with a sharp crack.
"In the case of State of New York v. Mark Bennett and Vanessa Cole, the defendants have pleaded guilty to all counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, identity falsification, and reckless endangerment of a vulnerable adult," the judge announced, reading from the official ledger.
"Given the premeditated nature of the financial devastation inflicted upon the primary victim, Claire Bennett, and the life-threatening neglect of Eleanor Bennett, this court passes down its sentence."
The courtroom held its collective breath.
"Mark Bennett is sentenced to twelve years in state prison with no possibility of parole for the first six years. Vanessa Cole is sentenced to fifteen years in federal penitentiary, alongside full revocation of her medical license and asset forfeiture of all properties."
