Chapter 3 - Unraveling the WebBefore Mark could slam the door in her face, Claire planted her palm against the wood and shoved past him with a force that surprised even herself.

The penthouse was breathtaking, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sparkling harbor, minimalist white leather furniture, and modern art pieces that cost more than Claire made in two years. Stepping out from the kitchen area was Vanessa Cole, wearing a silk robe and holding a glass of imported champagne.
Her glamorous smile froze the second she saw Claire.
"Claire," Vanessa said, trying to regain her composure with practiced clinical smoothness. "What a... unexpected surprise. We didn't expect you."
"Clearly," Claire said, her voice dangerously quiet. She walked toward the center of the expansive living room, taking in every detail: the designer clothes tossed over a sofa, the expensive bottles of wine on the counter, and the undeniable chemistry hanging heavy in the air.
Mark rushed forward, stumbling over his own words. "Claire, baby, listen to me. It’s not what you think. It's... it's a medical arrangement. Vanessa is helping me process the—"
"Shut up, Mark," Claire snapped, her eyes flashing with a fury so intense it made him flinch. She turned her gaze to Vanessa. "Let's talk about the medical treatments, Dr. Cole. The $120,000 experimental infusions. Which pharmaceutical company manufactures them? Or are they brewed right here in your high-end blender?"
Vanessa set her champagne glass down on the marble table with a sharp click. Her professional facade began to crack, replaced by a cold, arrogant smirk.
"You really are a naive woman, Claire," Vanessa said smoothly, crossing her arms. "You thought Mark was sick because you wanted to be needed. Some wives thrive on playing the martyr. We just gave you a script to act out while Mark and I secured our future."
Mark looked away, unable to meet his wife's eyes.
"The loan," Claire whispered, the horrifying truth settling over her like a freezing blanket. "The bank loan using my parents' house as collateral. The $120,000... where is the money, Mark?"
Mark swallowed hard, his voice barely a murmur. "It's... it's invested, Claire. In real estate. In this condo. We were going to pay you back once the property value went up—"
"Invested?" Claire let out a sharp, joyless laugh that echoed off the glass walls. "You stole my inheritance, you neglected your paralyzed mother, you lied to my face every single day, and you built a luxury love nest with my life savings."
She stepped right up to her husband, looking deep into the eyes of the man she had loved for twenty-two years, and raised her hand.

Crack.
The sound of the slap reverberated through the penthouse.
