Detective Vance’s financial crimes unit raided the Northgate Neurology Center. They discovered that Dr. Vanessa Cole was running an elaborate medical scam, creating fake patient diagnoses for wealthy or desperate spouses to bleed bank accounts dry under the guise of "experimental cures."

Vanessa attempted to flee the country, booking a one-way first-class flight to Zurich out of a private airfield.

She never made the flight.

Federal agents intercepted her luxury sports car right on the tarmac, slapping federal wire fraud and medical license revocation charges on her before she could even reach the boarding stairs. The once-glamorous physician found herself locked in a holding cell, stripped of her designer clothes, her champagne, and her professional reputation.

Meanwhile, Claire sat at her desk at the Maple Ridge Public Library.

The white cactus flower on the windowsill was still blooming brilliantly, its petals pure and untouched by the chaos outside.

Her coworker Jenna walked over, holding a freshly printed newspaper clipping with the headline: LOCAL DOCTOR AND HUSBAND ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MEDICAL FRAUD RING.
