Chapter 4 - The Counter-StrikeMark clutched his stinging cheek, staring at Claire in shock. He had never seen her resort to physical violence in all their years together. He had always taken her quiet endurance for granted, assuming she was a permanent fixture in his life—a tool to be used, discarded, and ignored.

"You're done, Mark," Claire said, her voice dropping an octave, steady and chillingly calm. "You think you've outsmarted everyone? You think because my name is on the mortgage and the debt, you're safe in your little glass castle?"

Vanessa sneered, regaining her arrogant composure. "Actually, yes, Ms. Bennett. The deed to this property is under a corporate LLC, and the loan paperwork you signed at the bank lists Mark as a co-borrower with equal operational rights. Legally, you signed away your primary leverage. If you make a scene, you're the one who goes bankrupt trying to pay back a six-figure debt while your house gets foreclosed on."

Claire looked at the female doctor, realizing just how deep and calculated this betrayal truly was. This wasn't a reckless affair—it was a premeditated financial stripping of everything she owned.

"You think I'm going to cry and beg you for mercy?" Claire asked, pulling her smartphone from her blazer pocket. She unlocked the screen, held it up, and hit speakerphone.

The line connected immediately.

"Hello, Detective Vance?" Claire said clearly, her eyes locked onto Mark and Vanessa. "Yes, this is Claire Bennett. I’d like to report a case of severe financial fraud, identity manipulation, and elder abandonment involving my husband, Mark Bennett, and a physician named Vanessa Cole at Northgate Neurology."

Color vanished from Vanessa's face. "Wait—what are you doing? Hang up that phone right now!"

Mark lunged forward to grab the phone, but Claire sidestepped him with cold precision, stepping backward toward the private elevator.

"I'm giving the police the routing numbers of the bank accounts where you transferred my loan funds, Doctor," Claire said into the phone, her gaze fixed on the terrified couple. "And as for elder abandonment? My mother-in-law is currently locked in a bedroom with no food, no water, and a falsified care log. The local precinct is already dispatching an ambulance and officers to my address."

The elevator doors slid open behind her.

"See you both in court," Claire whispered, stepping inside and pressing the lobby button as the doors closed on their panic-stricken faces.
