Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING

A heavy-duty tactical flash-bang grenade landed squarely on the wooden floor between Luca and his men, emitting a blinding, magnesium-white flash and a deafening concussive boom that rattled the cabin walls.

Luca screamed, dropping his weapon as white-hot noise tore through his equilibrium, stumbling backward into the dark.

Before he could recover his footing, two heavily armed men in black tactical gear—wearing the patch of an independent security firm that answered exclusively to Vivien’s offshore trusts—swarmed through the broken window and the front door, subduing Luca’s operatives in a matter of seconds with brutal, surgical efficiency.

Luca was slammed face-first onto the wooden floorboards, a heavy boot pressing into the base of his neck, driving the breath from his lungs.

Heavy footsteps echoed on the porch. The front door was kicked wide open, letting a massive gust of freezing wind and swirling snow rush into the cabin.

A silhouette stepped through the threshold.

Matteo Vescari stood in the doorway, soaked in melting snow, his dark overcoat unbuttoned, his chest heaving with exertion. He had flown up on a private charter jet three hours after Luca’s last check-in failed, driving the final miles himself with a gun on the passenger seat.

His eyes swept the chaotic room—his elite enforcers zip-tied on the floor, Luca pinned beneath a mercenary’s boot, and standing by the kitchen table, calm and untouchable, was his wife.

Matteo’s expression twisted into a mixture of absolute fury and hollow disbelief. He stepped past the downed men, his boots crunching on broken glass, stopping ten feet away from Vivien.

"You psychotic bitch," Matteo hissed, his voice trembling with a rage he couldn't control. He reached inside his coat, his hand curling around the grip of his handgun. "You think you can play games with me? You think you can steal my life and walk away?"

Vivien didn't flinch. She picked up the black case from the table, popped the latches, and pulled out a single sheet of paper—the very top page of the ledger.

"Go ahead, Matteo," she said softly, holding out the paper. "Pull the trigger. Shoot me right here. But before you do, you might want to look at who owns the primary holding corporation that controls Vescari Tower, your offshore bank accounts in Zurich, and the federal task force file currently sitting on the desk of the Attorney General."

Matteo froze, his hand tightening around the weapon inside his coat. He stared at the paper. Across the top header, written in clean, elegant legal typography, was a signature he hadn't seen in seven years.

It wasn't his name. It wasn't Vivien’s married name.

It was Viktor Vasiliev’s estate, transferred in full legal entirety to his sole surviving heir six months before she ever walked down the aisle toward Matteo Vescari.
