Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATUM

The silence in the cabin was so complete that the crackling of the fireplace sounded like gunfire.
Matteo slowly withdrew his hand from his coat, his fingers trembling slightly as the horrifying reality of what he was looking at finally penetrated his arrogant mind. For seven years, he hadn't owned Vivien. She had owned him. She had infiltrated his syndicate, managed his empire, cleaned his dirty money, and positioned herself silently at the center of his world, waiting for the exact moment his ego and his carelessness made him vulnerable.
"You... you set this up from the beginning," Matteo whispered, his voice hollow, stripped of all its terrifying authority. "The marriage... the company... all of it was a long con."
"Not a con, Matteo. An acquisition," Vivien corrected, stepping around the table and walking slowly toward him until she was standing just inches away. She looked up into his eyes—eyes that had once terrified mayors and police commissioners across the eastern seaboard. Now, they looked like the eyes of a trapped animal. "You thought you were the master chess player. You thought I was just a beautiful piece you moved around the board to make yourself look respectable. But while you were busy playing king, I bought the entire board, the building, and the land it’s built on."
Matteo swallowed hard, his throat dry as ash. "What do you want? Half the empire? Cash? Offshore accounts? Name your price, Viv. We can settle this."
Vivien let out a low, cold laugh that held no humor at all.
"I don't want your money, Matteo. I already have it," she said, raising the black case slightly. "And I don't want a divorce. Divorce is messy. It leaves loose ends in family court."
She turned around, walked back to the kitchen counter, and picked up a second document—a thick stack of federal grand jury subpoenas bearing the stamp of the United States District Court.
"You are going to walk out that door, get back in your car, and drive back to New York," Vivien said, her voice carrying the absolute weight of a death sentence. "At 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, you are going to call a press conference at Vescari Tower. You are going to announce your permanent retirement from public and private enterprise, citing 'health reasons.' You are going to hand over full operational control of the eastern waterfront and all legitimate holdings to my corporate shell."
"And if I refuse?" Matteo snarled, a desperate spark of his old menace flaring up. "If I tell my men to burn this cabin to the ground right now?"
May you like
Vivien smiled—a terrifying, radiant smile that chilled him to the bone.
"If you don't comply by noon tomorrow, the dead-man's switch on my laptop automatically transmits the unredacted financial database, audio confessions, and witness logs of every murder, bribe, and extortion plot you’ve committed since 2015 directly to the FBI, the IRS, and every rival syndicate boss from Boston to Miami." She leaned in close, her breath warm against his ear. "You won't even make it to a federal prison, Matteo. Your own men will tear you apart before you reach the state line."
