CHAPTER 4 — The Footage No One Could Escape

The sound of the front doors locking echoed through the boutique like the closing of a courtroom.
No one moved.
No one dared.
Blessing forced another smile, though sweat now rolled down her temples.
"Sir... surely we can discuss this privately."
Adrian Adeyemi didn't even look at her.
Instead, he gently helped his mother to her feet and offered her his arm with the tenderness of a devoted son.
"Mom, are you alright?"
The elderly woman smiled softly.
"I am."
Then her expression changed.
"But I'm disappointed."
Adrian nodded once.
"So am I."
He turned toward the Head of Corporate Security.
"Bring me every recording from every camera in this store."
Within seconds, a technician hurried into the office.
A large monitor above the showroom came alive.
The boutique's security footage began playing.
No editing.
No interruptions.
Just truth.
The first clip showed the old woman entering quietly with a warm smile.
Another showed Blessing laughing before the woman had spoken a single word.
Then came the whispers.
"She smells like the street."
"She's probably here to beg."
"Don't let her touch the jewelry."
The room became painfully silent.
Every employee who had laughed now watched themselves laughing.
Every customer who had mocked the old woman stared at the floor.
Blessing tried to interrupt.
"Sir, people joke all the time—"
Adrian raised one finger.
She immediately stopped speaking.
The video continued.
Everyone watched Kaima step forward.
"I'll help her."
Then came Blessing's voice.
"You're fired."
Finally...
The footage showed Kaima removing her name tag and placing it calmly on the counter.
"If respecting people costs me this job... I have no regrets."
The recording ended.
Silence.
Adrian slowly looked around the room.
"I built this company because my parents once couldn't afford food."
His voice remained calm.
"My mother cleaned houses."
"My father repaired bicycles."
"People laughed at them exactly the way all of you laughed today."
No one dared breathe.
"My mother still dresses simply."
"She insists on visiting our businesses without announcing who she is."
He paused.
"Do you know why?"
Nobody answered.
"Because she believes a person's true character appears when they think nobody important is watching."
He looked directly at Blessing.
"Today..."
"You proved her right."
Blessing's legs nearly gave out.
"Sir... please... I made a mistake."
Adrian's eyes remained cold.
"No."
"A mistake is forgetting someone's birthday."
"What you did was cruelty."
That was when another voice interrupted.
"Excuse me."
Everyone turned.
One of the wealthy women who had laughed earlier stepped forward nervously.
"I... I think I owe an apology."
She faced the old woman.
"I'm ashamed of how I behaved."
The old woman smiled kindly.
"I forgive you."
The woman burst into tears.
Watching that, several customers quietly removed the expensive jewelry they had intended to purchase.
One by one...
They placed it back into the display cases.
Without buying anything.
May you like
Without saying another word.
Blessing suddenly realized the nightmare had only just begun.
