Chapter 1 - The Poison That Stole Twelve Years

Luca Moretti had ruled one of the most powerful crime families in Europe before his thirtieth birthday.
People called him ruthless.
Governments feared him.
Rival families avoided saying his name aloud.
Then, one rainy evening twelve years earlier, everything changed.
Doctors claimed Luca had suffered a rare neurological disorder that permanently paralyzed him from the waist down.
The diagnosis came so quickly that no one questioned it.
Within weeks, the feared Mafia King was confined to an electric wheelchair.
His empire continued to operate, but the man who had once personally negotiated billion-dollar deals and survived assassination attempts now watched the world from a chair.
Only one person remained constantly by his side.
His beautiful fiancée, Valentina Romano.
Every morning...
Every afternoon...
Every night...
Valentina gently rolled up Luca's sleeve and injected what doctors described as an expensive experimental medication.
"It keeps your nerves from deteriorating," she always whispered with a reassuring smile.
Luca believed her.
Why wouldn't he?
She had sacrificed twelve years caring for a man everyone else thought would never walk again.
The mansion staff admired her devotion.
Business partners praised her loyalty.
Even Luca's closest bodyguards respected the woman who never left his side.
Only one employee never seemed convinced.
Elena.
A quiet housemaid who had worked at the estate for nearly nine years.
She always watched the injections with uneasy eyes.
Several times she tried to speak.
Each time Valentina conveniently interrupted.
One afternoon Elena suddenly resigned without explanation.
She disappeared with her young daughter, Maya.
Luca assumed they had simply moved away.
He never imagined she was running for their lives.
Months passed.
Then years.
Meanwhile strange things slowly began happening inside the Moretti estate.
Important financial decisions somehow benefited Valentina's relatives.
Trusted captains were quietly replaced.
Longtime allies disappeared from meetings.
Anyone who questioned her influence was dismissed.
Luca noticed the changes...
But trapped inside his wheelchair, he depended on the people around him.
He convinced himself he was becoming paranoid.
Until one spring afternoon...
The estate hosted a lavish engagement celebration.
Politicians.
Business leaders.
Crime bosses.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the ballroom while musicians played softly in the background.
Everyone gathered to celebrate Luca and Valentina's long-awaited wedding.
Halfway through the evening...
The front doors slowly opened.
A little girl walked inside.
She couldn't have been older than eight.
Brown curls framed her frightened face.
She wore a simple pink lace dress that looked painfully out of place among the designer gowns.
In her hands...
She carried a small white envelope.
Security guards stepped toward her.
Before they could speak...
She walked directly to Luca's wheelchair.
Every conversation stopped.
The ballroom fell silent.
Valentina forced a polite smile.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart..."
"This is a private event."
The little girl ignored her completely.
Instead...
She looked only at Luca.
"Mister..."
"My mommy said you're the only person who can protect us."
Luca frowned gently.
"What is your name?"
"Maya."
"And your mother?"
The girl swallowed nervously.
"Elena."
The name struck him immediately.
"The maid?"
Maya nodded.
Then she slowly pointed toward the syringe hidden inside Valentina's evening purse.
Her tiny voice echoed across the ballroom.
"She gives you that medicine every day."
Valentina froze.
"It helps you stay sick."
Complete silence.
Several guests exchanged confused glances.
Valentina laughed softly.
"Children have wonderful imaginations."
She removed the syringe from her purse.
"It's only his prescribed treatment."
But Maya didn't move.
She slowly opened the white envelope.
Inside...
Lay a DNA laboratory report.
She handed it to Luca with trembling fingers.
"My mommy said you should read this first."
Luca unfolded the document.
His breathing slowed.
His eyes widened.
Probability of Paternity: 99.9998%
Father:
Luca Moretti
Child:
Maya Elena Romano
His hands began shaking.
He looked at Maya.
Then at Elena standing silently near the ballroom entrance.
Tears streamed down the former maid's face.
"I never wanted your money," Elena whispered.
"I only wanted you to know the truth."
Luca looked back at the DNA report.
Then another realization struck him.
Romano.
The surname.
The same surname as Valentina before their engagement.
He slowly raised his eyes toward his fiancée.
"You knew."
Valentina's perfect smile disappeared.
The ballroom became impossibly quiet.
Luca noticed something else.
The syringe.
Clear liquid floated inside.
Exactly like every injection he had received for twelve years.
"Twelve years..."
he whispered.
"You told me this was medicine."
Valentina took one careful step backward.
"It kept you alive."
Luca stared at her.
"Or kept me helpless?"
No one answered.
Maya quietly moved beside Elena.
She reached into her pocket.
Then removed one final object.
A tiny glass vial.
Exactly identical to the one in Valentina's hand.
"My mommy hid this," Maya whispered.
"The doctor said it wasn't medicine."
Luca slowly gripped the armrests of his wheelchair.
Every muscle in his forearms tightened.
For the first time in over a decade...
He pushed downward.
His right knee twitched.
Almost imperceptibly.
Valentina saw it.
The color drained from her face.
She stumbled backward.
"Luca..."
"You shouldn't..."
He looked directly into her terrified eyes.
Then smiled.
Not with relief.
With terrifying calm.
"If I can move..."
"...then someone has been poisoning me."
Before anyone could react...
The ballroom doors burst open.
A gray-haired man in a bloodstained lab coat staggered inside surrounded by armed bodyguards.
He pointed directly at Valentina.
May you like
"No!"
"You don't understand!"
