Chapter 7 - THE GHOST OF THE PASTThe lower courtyard of the Moretti estate looked like a war zone. Smoke billowed from disabled security turrets, and the ancient stone fountains were scarred with bullet holes.

Luca strode out into the rain-slicked courtyard, flanked by Marco and a dozen of his most loyal, battle-hardened enforcers. The storm broke open, pouring sheets of freezing rain over the cobblestones, soaking their clothes, but none of them flinched.
Through the dense smoke and driving rain, the heavy iron gates of the estate slowly ground open.
A single black Maybach sedan rolled through, stopping precisely in the center of the courtyard. The rear door opened, and a pair of polished leather shoes stepped out onto the wet stone.
An old man, well into his seventies but standing tall and rigid as an iron pillar, stepped into the light of the emergency floodlamps. He wore a pristine white tailored suit that seemed impervious to the mud and rain, a long silver scarf draped over his shoulders, and a cold, calculating smile carved across a face lined with deep wrinkles and old burn scars.
Don Vincenzo Moretti.
"Well, well, well," Vincenzo’s voice echoed across the courtyard, raspy yet dripping with aristocratic arrogance. "Look at you, Luca. Twelve years locked in a chair, fed a slow-acting neurotoxin by your own fiancée, and yet here you stand, walking, breathing, and looking ready to challenge the gods."
Luca stopped twenty paces away, his hand resting casually near his shoulder holster. "You died in a car bombing in Palermo thirty years ago, Uncle. My father wept at your empty casket. Why come out of the shadows now?"
Vincenzo chuckled darkly, spreading his arms wide as the rain beat down on his silver hair. "Death is a magnificent tool, my boy. It allows you to watch from the darkness while fools build empires for you to inherit when the time is right. Valentina was weak. She fell in love with her own greed and let you slip through her fingers. But the Vanguard Syndicate does not fail twice."
"You poisoned me," Luca said, his voice dangerously low. "You stole twelve years of my life, my freedom, and my ability to watch my daughter grow."
May you like
"I made you strong!" Vincenzo snapped back, his smile vanishing, replaced by a sudden, venomous fury. "Before the poison, you were reckless, arrogant, and soft! The neurotoxin broke your body, but it forced your mind to calculate every single move, every betrayal, every vulnerability! I forged you into the ultimate king of the underworld, Luca! And now... you are going to hand the crown and all of the Moretti international shipping networks directly back to the Vanguard, or I press a single button that floods your underground panic shelter with lethal nerve gas, killing Elena and your precious little girl in less than sixty seconds."
Vincenzo slowly raised a small, encrypted remote control, his thumb resting directly over the red activation trigger.
