Chapter 2 - THE SCIENTIST’S CONFESSION AND THE BLOODLINE’S PRICE

The grand crystal chandelier above the ballroom seemed to vibrate as Dr. Alistair Vance staggered forward. His lab coat was stained with dark, dried blood across the shoulder, and his breathing came in ragged, desperate gasps. Armed security guards from the Moretti inner circle rushed to intercept him, their hands dropping instantly to the concealed holsters beneath their tailored jackets, but Luca raised a single, commanding hand.
"Stop," Luca said. His voice was no longer the soft, hesitant rasp of a man confined to a chair for twelve years. It carried the chilling, absolute authority of the mafia king who had once made entire nations tremble.
Every single guard froze mid-motion.
Dr. Vance collapsed onto his knees against the polished marble floor, his trembling fingers clutching a shattered leather briefcase. He raised his tear-streaked face, staring directly at Valentina Romano, who stood paralyzed, her designer evening gown looking like a shroud of defeat.
"She... she threatened my family, Luca," Dr. Vance sobbed, his voice echoing through the silent, packed ballroom. "Twelve years ago, when you took control of the syndicate, Valentina came to my laboratory with a proprietary paralytic neurotoxin. She wanted something that would mimic a permanent spinal cord lesion without leaving detectable trace elements in standard toxicology panels. Something that would slowly shut down motor neuron transmission while keeping cognitive function crystal clear, so you could sign away your assets under duress!"
Valentina’s face flushed a violent, frantic crimson. "He's lying! The man is mentally unstable! Security, get this lunatic out of my sight!"
"Shut your mouth, Valentina," Luca whispered. The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bones.
Luca shifted his gaze back to the scientist. "Go on, Doctor. Tell me everything. Every single detail."
Dr. Vance swallowed hard, wiping sweat and blood from his forehead. "The compound is called Vipera-9. It attacks the myelin sheath of the spinal motor neurons, locking them in a state of chemical dormancy. For twelve years, she didn't inject you with a cure, Luca. She injected you with a booster dose every twenty-four hours to ensure your legs never regenerated. But... but she didn't know that three months ago, one of your housemaids, Elena, discovered my secondary stash house while cleaning the east wing estate annex. Elena found the original chemical logs, the bank transfer records routing millions from your offshore accounts to Valentina’s secret Swiss portfolios, and a confidential birth certificate."
Luca slowly turned his head to look at Elena, who stood shielding little Maya with her body near the doorway. The realization hit him like a physical blow.
"Maya..." Luca's voice cracked. "She is..."
"She is your biological daughter," Elena answered, tears finally breaking free, streaming down her pale cheeks as she stepped forward into the light of the chandeliers. "Twelve years ago, before Valentina trapped you in that chair, we were close. Valentina found out. She threatened to slaughter my entire family if I didn't play the silent maid, if I didn't watch her poison you day after day. But when I realized I was pregnant with your child, I knew I had to stay close enough to protect you both. I smuggled out a blood sample for the DNA test and the antidote base six months ago. That’s why I had to run. I wasn't running from you, Luca. I was running to buy enough time to save your life."

Valentina let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. It was the sound of a cornered animal realizing the cage had finally locked.
"You think you've won?" Valentina hissed, her sophisticated facade completely shattering as she reached deep into her evening purse and pulled out a heavy, military-grade detonator with a digital blinking red screen. "If I go down, the entire Moretti estate goes up in flames! Every structural pillar of this mansion is rigged with high-yield C4 explosives! We all burn together!"
