Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Shed Door

Word Count Goal: ~3,500 words
The ICU heart monitor shrieked like a dying animal as the double doors swung wide. Blue and red warning lights flickered on the wall above Noah’s head, mirroring the panic rising in my throat.
Noah’s swollen eye was barely open, but his single trembling finger remained glued on my mother, Evelyn, and my sister, Madison. His bottom lip quivered, bleeding where he had bitten through it in pain.
"Monster," he breathed again. But it wasn't a cry for help. It was a warning.
Evelyn dropped her tissue-soaked hands, her tearful expression instant-melting into cold, jagged contempt. "He’s confused, officer! He’s on heavy pain medication! He doesn't know what he's saying!"
"Shut up, Mom," I snapped, stepping between them and my son. "Don't you dare touch him."
Detective Vance didn't flinch. He remained standing near the IV pole, holding up a small digital camera he had retrieved from his jacket. "We found this hidden in the rafters of the backyard shed, Mrs. Carter. It recorded continuously for thirty-six hours. We know your son wasn't just kept in there. We know you weren't the only ones in that yard."
My mother’s posture stiffened. Madison took a step back toward the door, her knuckle pressed against her mouth.
Noah leaned his head back onto his blood-stained pillow, his chest heaving under the thin white blanket. He tugged weakly at my coat sleeve. I leaned down until my ear was inches from his lips.
"Mommy..." Noah rasped, his voice barely a croak.
"I'm here, baby. Mommy's right here."
"The monster in the shed..." Noah whimpered, "He had... Daddy's voice."
A icy shockwave crashed down my spine. The room seemed to tilt sideways.
"What did you say?" I whispered, my brain refusing to process the sound of his words.
"Daddy was in the shed," Noah sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt and dried blood on his cheeks. "Grandma and Auntie Maddy locked him in with me. Daddy said... Daddy said if I told you he wasn't overseas, he'd make you sleep forever."
I whirled around to face my mother, my vision turning red at the edges. "My husband was deployed six months ago in Syria! What is he talking about?!"
Evelyn didn't look at me. She looked at Detective Vance. A terrifying, slow smile spread across her wrinkled face—a smile so devoid of humanity it made my stomach turn.
"You always were too naive, Emily," Evelyn said softly. "You thought Mark was a hero serving his country. You thought he was sending you those monthly allotment checks to cover your mortgage."
"He is deployed!" I screamed, grabbing her by the collar of her designer blouse. "I spoke to his commander!"
"You spoke to a burner phone service Mark paid three thousand dollars to set up," Madison hissed from the corner, her voice dripping with poison. "Mark never left Texas, Emily. He was hiding right in Mom's backyard. And do you know why? Because he didn't want a divorce. He wanted your two-million-dollar life insurance policy—and he needed Noah out of the way so you wouldn't have an heir."
Before I could lung at Madison, Detective Vance grabbed my shoulders, pulling me back as two uniformed officers burst through the ICU doors.
"Evelyn Carter, Madison Carter, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, and felony kidnapping," Vance announced, snapping steel handcuffs around my mother's wrists.
"You think you've won, Emily?" my mother laughed, her cackle echoing down the sanitized hospital corridor as they dragged her away. "Go check your bank account! Go check the hotel room in Denver! Mark isn't in the shed anymore... He's looking for you!"
My phone began to buzz furiously in my pocket.
