Chapter 5 - The Mastermind in Plain Sight

Word Count Goal: ~3,500 words

Silence fell over Gate D22 like a heavy curtain. Passengers gasped, ducking behind luggage carts and security counters as federal agents immediately drew their weapons, aiming directly at Mark's chest.

"Drop the detonator!" Vance barked, stepping in front of me with his gun raised.

Mark didn't look at Vance. He looked at me, his smile broadening.

"You always were too predictable, Emily," Mark sneered. "Always playing the dutiful mother, the hardworking wife, the corporate ladder climber. You never saw what was happening right under your nose, did you?"

"You hurt our son, Mark!" I screamed, tears streaming down my face as I tried to push past Vance. "He’s six years old! He loved you!"

"He was an obstacle," Mark said dispassionately. "Just like you. Do you really think I spent six months shivering in your mother's shed? Do you really think Evelyn and Madison were in charge?"

I paused, a cold dread pooling in my stomach. "What are you talking about?"

"Evelyn didn't help me hide," Mark laughed mocking tone. "Evelyn was my employee. She owed three hundred thousand dollars in gambling debts to people who make men disappear. I bought her debt. I bought her house. And I bought Madison's loyalty with a five-percent cut of the offshore transfers."

The little boy standing beside Mark whimpered, pulling off his hoodie. It wasn't Noah—it was just a terrified child from the airport lounge whom Mark had grabbed as a human shield.

"Put the detonator down, Mark," Vance repeated, his trigger finger tense. "There are twenty armed federal marshals surrounding this gate. You aren't getting on that plane."

"I don't need to get on the plane," Mark said quietly.

He lowered his hand and pressed the button on the remote.

A loud, mechanical click echoed through the terminal. But no explosion sounded. No scream came from the radio.

Instead, the large electronic departure boards above Gate D22 flickered, turning black. Then, line after line of red text began scrolling across every screen in the airport:

CRIMINAL EVIDENCE TRANSFER COMPLETE. TARGET: EMILY CARTER. TOTAL EMBEZZLED: $14,200,000. STATUS: TRANSMITTED TO FEDERAL PROSECUTORS.

"The remote wasn't a bomb, Emily," Mark whispered, stepping backward toward the secure emergency exit behind the boarding jetway. "It was a wireless server trigger. Everything in my black box—your forged signatures, your bank access logs, your recorded confessions—just went to the FBI. By noon today, you’ll be in a federal holding cell facing twenty years."

Before Vance could pull the trigger, Mark threw the terrified child into the crowd, creating instant chaos, and slipped through the heavy metal emergency exit door, slamming it locked behind him.

"Contain the perimeter!" Vance yelled, lunging toward the door.

I didn't wait for the police. I grabbed a steel stanchion pole from the queue line, smashed the glass casing on the emergency release panel, and pulled the alarm lever.

The heavy metal doors unbolted with a deafening screech. I tore through the dark stairwell, sprinting down toward the tarmac where the rain was howling.
