Mark shrieked as his kneecap shattered under the force of the blow. He crumpled onto the wet asphalt, clutching his leg, rolling in the puddle of muddy rainwater.
"You crazy bitch!" he screamed, his face contorted in pain.
I stood over him, holding the heavy steel pole, watching him writhe on the ground.
Three SWAT vans skidded to a halt on the tarmac, blinding us with their high-beam spotlights. Dozens of officers spilled out, their rifles trained on Mark. Detective Vance ran up, his hands resting on his gun holster, panting heavily.
"Emily! Step back!" Vance commanded.
I didn't move. I looked down at the man I had spent seven years loving, the man who had almost destroyed everything I cherished.
"Check his inner coat pocket, Detective," I said calmly over the sound of the rain. "The flash drive with the encrypted accounts is in the lining. And the receipts for the off-grid property in Belize are in his boot."
Vance rushed forward, tackling Mark to the ground and forcefully pulling his arms behind his back to apply the restraints. Another officer reached into Mark's jacket, pulling out a sealed leather pouch containing six fake passports, three encrypted drives, and half a million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds.
Mark spat blood onto the concrete, glaring up at me as Vance hoisted him to his feet. "You think this is over, Emily?! Your life is ruined! The paper trail still points to you! You'll spend the next ten years fighting this in court!"
"I don't think so, Mark," I said, pulling my personal phone out of my pocket—the phone that had been recording our entire conversation on the tarmac via cloud upload. "You just confessed to the whole thing on a live feed broadcast directly to the District Attorney's office."
Mark stared at my phone in absolute horror.
"Take him away," Vance ordered.
As they dragged Mark toward the transport vehicle, Detective Vance turned to me, wiping rain from his eyes. He shook his head in disbelief. "You're the toughest civilian I've ever seen, Mrs. Carter."

"I'm not tough," I said, my voice cracking for the first time as the adrenaline finally began to fade. "I'm a mother."
"Your son is waiting for you at the hospital," Vance said softly. "The doctors say he's going to make a full recovery."
