Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Mirror (TWIST ENDING)

Word Count Goal: ~3,500 words
Three weeks later.
The morning sun shone bright and warm through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new house in Austin, Texas.
The trial had been swift. With Mark's taped confession, the encrypted drives found on his person, and the video footage from the shed camera, Mark was sentenced to forty-five years in maximum security without parole. My mother and sister, Madison, were both convicted as accomplices, receiving fifteen-year sentences each.
My corporate name was cleared. The company awarded me a full executive promotion and a substantial settlement for the security breach caused by Mark's hacking.
In the living room, Noah was sitting on the soft carpet, his arm wrapped in a bright yellow cast. He was laughing softly as he played with a brand-new set of plastic dinosaurs, his smile back, his eyes bright and full of life. He wore two bright red socks—and for the first time in months, he didn't complain about his feet being "mad."
I walked over, set down a cup of hot tea, and kissed the top of his head.
"Everything okay, baby?" I asked gently.
"Yeah, Mommy," Noah smiled, holding up a T-Rex. "Look! He's the king now!"
"He sure is," I smiled, sitting down beside him.
My phone vibrated on the coffee table. It was a mail delivery notification.
I picked up the envelope that had arrived earlier that morning. It had no return address, only a Dallas postmark stamped three days ago—the day before Mark was transferred to state prison.
I opened the envelope. Inside was a single printed photograph.
It was a picture of me, taken from inside my hotel room in Denver at 11:45 p.m. three weeks ago—two minutes before the hospital had called me.
I was standing near the window, holding my phone, looking out at the city lights.
I flipped the photo over. Written on the back in neat, elegant handwriting—handwriting that didn't belong to Mark, my mother, or Madison—was a short message:
“Mark was just the hammer, Emily. You still don't know who bought the house.”
I slowly lowered the photograph, my heart stopping in my chest as a cold breeze swept through the open window.
Noah looked up at me, his smile fading slightly as he noticed my pale face.
"Mommy?" he whispered. "Why are you looking at that picture?"
"Noah..." I swallowed hard, my voice barely above a breath. "Who gave you the toy dinosaur you were holding at the airport?"
Noah blinked his big brown eyes. "The nice lady in the white coat at Grandma's house. The one who told Daddy where to hide."
I stared at the back of the photograph, realizing with terrifying clarity that the nightmare hadn't ended on the tarmac.
