Chapter 1 - The Scent of Betrayal

The wail of the ambulance sirens in the distance did nothing to drown out the suffocating silence in our kitchen. Emma’s hand felt like a cold stone in mine.
Mark didn't look at me. He kept his eyes locked on Rachel, the unicorn cup still gripped tightly in his white-knuckled fist.
"What did you put in it, Rachel?" Mark’s voice wasn’t loud. It was a deadly, vibrating whisper that cut through the room like a razor.
Rachel took a step back, her eyes widening in what looked like textbook innocence. "What are you talking about? It’s just lemonade, Mark! I brought the organic mix from home because Emma loves it. What is wrong with you?"
"It’s not lemonade," Mark snarled, finally standing up. He stepped over the puddle of pink liquid, moving toward her like a predator. "It smells like bitter almonds. Cyanide? Or maybe something slower? Something you took from your lab?"
My breath hitched. Rachel was a senior researcher at a pharmaceutical firm. She had access to things that could stop a heart in seconds without leaving an obvious trace.
"Mark, stop it! Look at Emma!" I screamed, pulling my daughter’s limp body against my chest. "We need to save her!"
The paramedics burst through the front door a second later, shattering the tension. The kitchen erupted into chaos. They pushed Mark aside, bagged the unicorn cup as evidence at Mark's frantic insistence, and hooked Emma up to a monitor. Her vitals were dropping dangerously fast.
As they lifted my little girl onto the gurney, I ran to follow them. But when I turned back to grab my purse, I caught sight of Mark. He wasn't looking at Emma. He wasn't looking at Rachel either.

He was staring directly at the birthday cake sitting on the counter. Specifically, at the small, plastic unicorn figurine decorating the top.
And in the center of the figurine's plastic eye, a tiny, rhythmic blue light was flashing.
