Chapter 5 - The Showdown

"But Rachel made one mistake," Mark smiled, raising the iron bar. "She underestimated how fast I could pivot. The police think she did it. By the time they realize the truth, you'll have suffered a tragic, grief-induced suicide right here in our home."

He lunged at me.

I threw Mark's heavy laptop directly at his face. It struck his forehead, drawing blood and knocking him off balance. The tire iron clattered to the hardwood floor.

I didn't hesitate. I dashed past him, scrambling down the stairs toward the front door. But Mark recovered quickly. I could hear his heavy footsteps thundering down behind me. Just as I reached the entryway, his hand slammed against the door, pinning it shut.

He grabbed my hair, yanking my head back. "You're not leaving, Chloe."

I screamed, driving my elbow backward into his ribs. He grunted, loosening his grip just enough for me to reach into my pocket. I pulled out the only weapon I had—the sharp, pointed plastic horn of the unicorn figurine I had taken from the cake.

I drove it backward, burying the plastic spike deep into his thigh.

Mark roared in agony, collapsing to his knees. I threw the front door open and sprinted out onto the front lawn, screaming for help. Within seconds, neighbors emerged from their houses, and the sound of distant police sirens began to echo down the street.

Mark tried to hobble out after me, but as he reached the porch, three police cruisers tore around the corner, their tires screeching to a halt. They had been dispatched by the hospital detective who had just finished analyzing the full toxicology reports.

Mark was slammed onto the hood of the car and handcuffed, his bleeding leg staining the concrete.
