Chapter 6 - The Final Twist

Two weeks later, life had returned to a terrifying, quiet baseline.
Emma was fully recovered, her laughter once again filling the rooms of our new apartment. Rachel had been cleared of all attempted murder charges, though she faced probation for reckless endangerment. Still, I forgave her. She had saved my life when I was blind to the monster sleeping next to me.
Mark was behind bars, awaiting a trial that would undoubtedly put him away for the rest of his life.
I sat on the balcony of my new home, sipping a cup of tea, watching Emma play with her dolls on the rug inside. The sun was setting, casting long, peaceful shadows across the room. My phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown number.
I picked it up. "Hello?"
"Did you really think it was just about the insurance money, Chloe?"
It was Mark’s voice. He sounded calm, almost amused, calling from a recorded prison line.
"Don't call here again, Mark. It's over," I said, my voice trembling.
"It's not over," he chuckled softly. "Check your daughter’s medical charts from the day she was admitted. Look at the DNA profiling they did for the toxicology baseline."
My heart stopped. "What are you talking about?"
"Rachel didn't just know about the poison, Chloe. Ask her why she kept quiet for three years while I diverted funds. Ask her whose child Emma really is. I wasn't trying to kill you for money, Chloe. I found out the truth about you and my brother-in-law seven years ago. The poison wasn't to eliminate a wife... it was to slowly erase the evidence of your affair."
The line went dead.

I dropped the phone. Through the glass window, I looked at Emma. She turned around, smiling at me, her cheeks pink, her eyes bright.
And for the first time in my life, I realized she looked absolutely nothing like Mark. She looked exactly like his brother.
