Chapter 4 - The Twisted Truth

As I clicked through the files, the terrifying reality of my marriage began to unspool.

Mark wasn’t an accountant. The financial records on his laptop showed millions of dollars flowing from a shell company registered in Panama, funded by the very pharmaceutical conglomerate Rachel worked for.

I opened a video file from a week ago. The hidden kitchen camera captured Mark standing exactly where Rachel had stood during the party. He opened a small amber vial, tipped a clear liquid into my favorite coffee mug, and stirred it smoothly.

He had been poisoning me.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over the laptop screen.

"You shouldn't have come home, Chloe," a voice said from the doorway.

I spun around. Mark was standing there, holding a heavy tire iron from the garage. His face was entirely devoid of emotion.

"You're poisoning me," I whispered, backing away until my spine hit the desk. "Why? And why Emma?"

Mark let out a dry, humorless laugh. "I never meant to hurt Emma. That was your dear sister’s doing. Rachel found out about the project. She knew I was systematically building a medical history of chronic heart failure for you so I could collect the $5 million insurance policy and the corporate payout."

"You monster," I gasped.

"Rachel tried to play hero," Mark continued, taking a step forward. "She knew if she poisoned Emma with a non-lethal but highly traceable dose of the exact same compound I was using on you, the doctors would run a full toxicology screen on the entire family. She knew they would find the poison in your system, too. She did it to expose me."

My jaw dropped. Rachel hadn't tried to kill Emma out of malice. She had sacrificed my daughter’s immediate health to save my life from the man standing in front of me. Her smile in the kitchen wasn't a smirk of evil triumph—it was the grim satisfaction of a trap snapping shut.
