Chapter 2 - The Secret In The Lab Reports

Three hours later, the ICU waiting room smelled of stale coffee and bleach. Emma was stabilized, but she was in a medically induced coma. The doctors confirmed she had ingested a concentrated dose of a specialized beta-blocker—a drug that severely lowered her heart rate to near-fatal levels.
The police had already taken Rachel in for questioning. The evidence was damning: her fingerprints were the only ones on the lemonade pitcher besides mine, and the residue in the cup matched a compound currently in development at her company.
I sat in the plastic chair, my head in my hands, crying until my throat was raw. Mark sat next to me, staring blankly at the wall.
"How could she do this?" I sobbed. "She’s my sister, Mark. She loves Emma. Why would she want to kill a seven-year-old?"
Mark slowly turned his head to look at me. The warmth I had loved in his eyes for eight years was completely gone. "She didn't want to kill Emma, Chloe. She wanted to hurt us. Or rather... she wanted to stop what was coming."
"What are you talking about?" I asked, pulling back.
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed. He looked at the screen, and his face drained of what little color it had left. He stood up abruptly. "I have to make a call. Stay with Emma."
He walked briskly down the hallway, disappearing around the corner.
Suspicion, cold and sharp, pierced through my grief. Mark’s reaction at the house hadn't just been protective—it had been knowing. He knew the smell. He knew the chemical. And he had been staring at a hidden camera in our own kitchen.
I waited two minutes, then quietly stood up and followed him.

The hospital corridor was long and quiet. I crept toward the exit door leading to the stairwell, where I could hear Mark's muffled voice echoing against the concrete walls.
"You told me it wouldn't happen yet," Mark was hissing into the phone. "The agreement was after the new year. Why did she push the timeline? Rachel knows everything, you idiot. If she talks to the cops about the clinical trials, we’re both going down for murder—and not just Emma's."
