CHAPTER 2 — What Was Hidden

Daniel swung the pry bar with every ounce of strength he had.
CRACK.
The first board splintered.
Patricia screamed.
"No!"
Daniel ignored her.
Another strike.
Then another.
Dust exploded into the air.
Mariana pulled Inés close, shielding her eyes.
As the third plank lifted...
...everyone froze.
There was no body.
Only a small hidden compartment beneath the floor.
Inside lay a faded blue backpack.
Leo's backpack.
Mariana recognized it instantly.
She had stitched his initials inside the front pocket herself.
With shaking hands Daniel unzipped it.
Inside were Leo's favorite dinosaur shirt.
His red toy car.
A tiny flashlight.
A family photograph.
And a notebook.
Every page was filled with childish handwriting.
Some pages were stained with tears.
Others with dirt.
The final page read:
"If Mom and Dad find this... Aunt Patty said I had to stay quiet because bad men were looking for me. She promised she'd bring me home soon."
Daniel looked up slowly.
Patricia was already backing toward the front door.
"I can explain..."
"You lied to us."
"I was trying to protect him!"
"Where is my son?"
Patricia broke into tears.
"I don't know anymore."
Those four words struck harder than any confession.
Police arrived within minutes.
The hidden compartment shocked investigators.
But what shocked them even more...
...was the discovery that the compartment had never been designed to hold a child.
It was built to hide documents.
Someone had recently enlarged it.
Someone with construction experience.
Someone Patricia never mentioned.
Detectives found security-camera footage from a nearby gas station recorded nine months earlier.
A white contractor's truck.
Patricia wasn't driving.
A man Daniel had never seen before was.
And in the passenger seat...
A frightened little boy looked out the window.
May you like
Leo.
Alive.
