CHAPTER 3 — The Truth No One Expected

The entire investigation changed overnight.
Leo had not died beneath Patricia's floor.
He had escaped.
Detectives tracked the contractor's truck to an abandoned ranch nearly two hours outside the city.
There they found underground rooms hidden beneath an old warehouse.
Several children had been kept there over the years.
When officers entered...
A frightened voice echoed through the darkness.
"Dad?"
Daniel dropped his flashlight.
Leo stepped out slowly.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Father and son collided in an embrace neither would ever forget.
Mariana fell to her knees sobbing.
Even veteran officers wiped away tears.
Everyone believed the nightmare was finally over.
Until Leo whispered something that froze the room.
"It wasn't Aunt Patty who took me."
Daniel stared.
"What do you mean?"
Leo looked toward the police vehicles outside.
"The man who visited every week..."
"...wore a police badge."
The warehouse fell silent.
One detective slowly lowered his eyes.
Another reached for his radio.
Because only three officers had known the ranch's location before the raid.
And one of them...
...had quietly disappeared minutes earlier.

The hunt was no longer for a kidnapper.
It had become a race to expose a trusted protector who had hidden in plain sight from the very beginning.
