CHAPTER 7 — The Voice That Saved Everyone

The gunman's smile disappeared the moment he stepped through the shattered hospital doors.

Police officers shouted for everyone to get down.

Patients screamed.

Nurses rushed children into nearby rooms.

Daniel wrapped both arms around Leo and Inés, shielding them behind a concrete support column as bullets shattered glass along the reception desk.

The gunman wasn't firing wildly.

He was searching.

Searching for one little girl.

"Inés!" he shouted.

"You've heard enough!"

Leo pulled his father closer.

"Dad... he's the one."

Daniel's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

Across the lobby, Detective Ramos and two officers tried to corner the attacker, but the man knew the building's layout. He slipped through a side corridor toward the pediatric wing.

That was where Inés had been headed.

"He knows where she is!" Mariana cried.

Without thinking, Daniel sprinted after him.

The hallway echoed with alarms and terrified voices.

Just as the gunman reached a locked emergency exit, he stopped.

He looked confused.

Then angry.

He began checking every room.

"It's wrong..." he muttered.

"She was here."

Behind him, Daniel noticed something.

Inés wasn't looking at the man.

She was staring at the ceiling.

"Daddy..."

"He says the bad man forgot."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

"Leo."

Everyone froze.

Leo was standing beside him.

Yet Inés pointed upward.

"The other Leo."

Detective Ramos followed her gaze.

A ceiling maintenance panel hung slightly open above the corridor.

Officers quickly climbed onto a rolling cart and pulled it down.

Inside was a small waterproof pouch covered in dust.

The gunman's face instantly turned pale.

"No!"

Detective Ramos opened the pouch.

Inside were several flash drives, handwritten ledgers, and dozens of photographs.

Names.

Dates.

Bank transfers.

Locations.

Enough evidence to expose the entire kidnapping network.

The gunman lunged forward in desperation.

Before he could reach the pouch, officers tackled him to the ground.

Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

"It's over," Detective Ramos said.

The man laughed bitterly.

"You think I'm the last one?"

"No," Ramos replied calmly.

"But you're the first who's going to talk."

Months later, investigators dismantled the criminal organization using the evidence hidden inside the ceiling.

Multiple missing children were found alive.

Several corrupt officials were arrested.

Families who had searched for years finally received answers.

As for Patricia...

The court learned she had helped conceal evidence out of fear after being threatened by the kidnappers.

She was convicted for her crimes, but the judge acknowledged that she had eventually cooperated and helped investigators uncover the organization.

She left the courtroom in tears, knowing she had destroyed the people she had once tried to protect.

One quiet evening, Daniel watched Leo and Inés play together in their own backyard again.

The little red toy car rolled across the grass.

Leo smiled.

For the first time in nearly a year, it looked like the smile of an ordinary seven-year-old boy.

Daniel knelt beside his children and held them close.

Some scars would never disappear.

But neither would hope.

And this time...

Hope had found its way home.
