CHAPTER 5 — Max Finds What Everyone Else Missed

The police increased patrols around the building.
Neighbors kept an eye on me.
Friends insisted I move away.
But moving wouldn't erase the fear.
One rainy afternoon, I decided to pack a few boxes anyway.
Maybe leaving was the only answer.
As I pulled old storage bins from the bedroom closet, Max suddenly rushed into the room.
He ignored me completely.
Instead, he sniffed the air.
Then the wall.
Again.
Again.
Again.
His tail became stiff.
He scratched furiously at the drywall beside the closet.
I sighed.
"Max... not again."
But he wouldn't stop.
His paws clawed deeper.
His barking echoed through the apartment.
Something felt horribly familiar.
I grabbed a flashlight and looked closely.
Behind the scratched paint...
A tiny black circle.
Almost invisible.
No larger than a button.
A camera.
Hidden inside my bedroom wall.
My entire body went numb.
The police arrived within minutes.
When they removed the device, they found far more than a hidden camera.
There was also a miniature microphone...
A wireless transmitter...
And a battery pack hidden inside the wall cavity.
Someone had been watching.
Listening.
For weeks.
The detective stared silently at the equipment before saying,
"He knew your apartment better than we thought."
Then the forensic technician uncovered something even worse.
The transmitter wasn't active anymore.
It had been switched off...
The exact night Max attacked the intruder.
May you like
Meaning...
Someone had already collected everything it recorded.
