The discovery changed the entire investigation.
Police no longer believed the intruder had acted alone.
Someone else had helped him.

Maintenance workers.

The building's former maintenance contractor.
He had been secretly working with the attacker in exchange for money.
He had installed the hidden camera.
Copied the apartment key.
And provided every detail about my daily routine.
Both men were arrested within forty-eight hours.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Neither would ever threaten anyone again.
Months later, I finally moved into a new home with Max.
It wasn't the apartment that haunted me anymore.
It was the thought of what could have happened if I had ignored him completely.
People still tell me dogs are "just pets."
I simply smile.
Because I know the truth.
