CHAPTER 9 — The Letter Max Never Knew He Wrote

Five years passed.

The fear that once controlled my life slowly became a memory.

Max was older now.

His golden coat had faded around his face.

His playful sprints had become slow walks.

But every evening, he still insisted on stopping in front of every door we passed, sniffing carefully before letting me continue.

Some habits never disappear.

One autumn afternoon, I received an invitation from the police department.

A young rookie officer wanted to meet me.

"I have something that belongs to you," he said.

When I arrived, he placed a worn evidence folder on the table.

Inside was the complete case file.

Hundreds of photographs.

Interview transcripts.

Forensic reports.

Then I noticed something I had never seen before.

A handwritten statement from Detective Harris.

It wasn't part of the official investigation.

It had simply been tucked into the folder.

It read:

"In twenty-three years as a detective, I've seen brave officers, courageous witnesses, and remarkable survivors. But I have never witnessed loyalty like the one shown by that dog. Every person in this city sleeps a little safer because one animal refused to ignore his instincts."

At the bottom was another note.

"If Max is still alive... tell him thank you for all of us."

I couldn't stop the tears.

That evening, I sat on the living room floor beside Max.

He rested his aging head on my lap.

I read every word aloud.

He didn't understand the language.

But when I whispered, "They're thanking you," his tail gently tapped against the floor.

May you like

As if somehow...

He already knew.
