CHAPTER 8 — The Collar I Will Never Take Off

The trial lasted nearly three weeks.
For the first time, I saw the man again.
He sat behind reinforced glass, expressionless.
He never looked at the judge.
Never looked at the jury.
He stared only at me.
Until Max entered the courtroom.
Because prosecutors had requested a special appearance from the dog that had stopped the attack.
The moment Max walked beside me...
Everything changed.
The man lowered his eyes.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
The jury listened to every piece of evidence.
The hidden cameras.
The surveillance photos.
The plans.
The weapons.
The years of stalking.
After only four hours of deliberation...
The verdict came back.
Guilty on every count.
He would never walk free again.
Months later, our city unveiled a bronze statue outside the police headquarters.
It wasn't of a detective.
Or a judge.
Or a police officer.
It was of a golden retriever standing proudly in front of a doorway.
A plaque beneath it read:
"Sometimes the first hero on the scene walks on four legs."
I visit that statue every year.
Max is older now.
The gray around his muzzle grows a little wider each season.
His steps are slower.
His hearing isn't what it used to be.
But every night...
Before I lock the front door...
He still stands between me and the hallway.
Just for a moment.
As if he's making sure the world is safe one more time.
People often tell me that I rescued Max when I adopted him from a shelter years ago.
I always smile.
Because they're wrong.
The truth is much simpler.
I may have given him a home...
May you like
But when darkness came looking for me...
He gave me the rest of my life.
