CHAPTER 1 — Jerry Knew Something I Didn't

CHAPTER 1 — Jerry Knew Something I Didn't

The couch looked perfect.

Soft gray fabric. Modern design. Almost too perfect for the price.

The salesman smiled warmly as he helped load it into my truck.

"Someone's going to love this beauty," he said.

I believed him.

What I didn't know...

...was that the couch had a secret no one was supposed to discover.

The moment I carried it into my living room, my golden retriever, Jerry, froze.

His tail stopped wagging.

His ears stood straight up.

He slowly approached the couch like he was tracking an injured animal.

He sniffed every corner.

Every seam.

Every cushion.

Then he reached the right armrest.

He growled.

Not a playful growl.

A deep... warning growl I'd never heard before.

"Relax, buddy," I laughed.

"It's just furniture."

Jerry barked loudly.

Then he slammed both paws against the armrest.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Within minutes he was scratching so hard threads started coming loose.

"Jerry! Stop!"

I pulled him away.

Five minutes later...

He came back.

The exact same spot.

Same growl.

Same frantic scratching.

That night he refused to leave the couch.

He didn't sleep.

He simply stared at that armrest...

...as if someone was trapped inside.

By morning I couldn't ignore it anymore.

Jerry had never acted like this.

Not once in eight years.

Something wasn't right.

My hands shook as I grabbed a utility knife.

One careful slice...

The fabric ripped open.

Yellow foam spilled onto the floor.

Old springs.

Dust.

Rotting wood.

Then...

Buried deep inside...

I saw something wrapped in black plastic.

It wasn't part of the couch.

It had been hidden there on purpose.

My heartbeat exploded.

Jerry barked wildly.

I reached inside...

and pulled.

What I uncovered wasn't money... and it wasn't jewelry.

It was something far more terrifying.
