CHAPTER 5 — The Storage Unit

The detective examined photos of the missing flip phone.
Then he noticed something no one else had.
On the back cover...
Barely visible beneath years of scratches...
Someone had engraved four tiny numbers.
17-B9.
At first they meant nothing.
Then I remembered something Emily had written in her diary.
"If anything happens to me... the second key stays where only I would remember."
The detective searched old property records.
Hours later he looked up with wide eyes.
"There was a storage facility outside town."
"Building 17."
"Locker B9."
The police obtained a warrant.
Jerry came with us.
The storage building looked abandoned.
Dust covered everything.
The locker door was rusted shut.
When officers finally forced it open...
Everyone stood speechless.
Inside were dozens of sealed boxes.
Stacks of financial records.
Hard drives.
Cash.
Fake passports.
Photographs.
And files connecting several wealthy businessmen to years of fraud, blackmail, and disappearances.
It wasn't just Emily's case anymore.
It was an entire criminal organization.
One officer whispered,
"My God..."
"This could bring down half the city."
Then Jerry began barking again.
Not at the boxes.
At the concrete wall behind them.
Workers broke through the thin layer of cement.
Hidden inside was a small steel safe.
Within it lay a sealed letter addressed simply:
May you like
"To Whoever Trusted My Dog More Than My Silence."
None of us were prepared for what Emily had written next.
