CHAPTER 7 — The Final Name on Emily's List

I thought it was over.

The arrests had made national headlines.

The criminal network had collapsed.

The storage locker had been emptied.

The evidence was locked away by federal investigators.

For the first time in weeks, I slept without fear.

Then, one rainy afternoon, Detective Harris knocked on my door.

His face was unusually serious.

"We missed something."

He placed a thin folder on my kitchen table.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old family picture.

Emily.

Her parents.

A little girl.

And a smiling man standing beside them.

"I've never seen him before," I said.

The detective looked me straight in the eyes.

"Neither had we."

The man's face didn't appear in any police database.

No driver's license.

No birth certificate.

No fingerprints.

Nothing.

It was as if he'd never officially existed.

Then Harris showed me something that made my blood freeze.

The same man appeared in dozens of photographs taken over twenty years.

Always in the background.

At charity events.

School graduations.

Hospitals.

Funerals.

Watching.

Waiting.

Never smiling at the camera.

"He wasn't part of the organization," Harris whispered.

"He was controlling it."

Suddenly my phone vibrated.

An unknown email had arrived.

There was no subject line.

Only one attachment.

A recent photo of my house.

Taken that very morning.

Standing beside my mailbox...

Was the same man from Emily's photographs.

Under the image were six chilling words.

"You found the wrong ending."

Jerry leaped toward the front window, barking wildly.

I looked outside.

The street was empty.

But lying on my porch...

Was a neatly wrapped package.

Inside it sat the flip phone that had been stolen from my house.

May you like

This time...

It contained one final voice recording.
