CHAPTER 6 — Jerry Became a Hero

The letter was heartbreaking.
Emily explained that months before she disappeared, she had realized someone close to her planned to kill her.
She had gathered every piece of evidence she could.
But she trusted almost no one.
Except one living creature.
Her golden retriever.
In the letter, she wrote:
"Dogs notice what humans ignore. If someone ever finds this because a dog refused to give up... believe the dog."
Those words left the entire room silent.
Investigators eventually confirmed that the refurbished couch had once belonged to Emily's family.
When her house was cleared out after she vanished, no one knew the evidence had been hidden inside the armrest.
Years later, the couch was sold, repaired, and unknowingly passed from owner to owner...
Until it reached me.
Thanks to the documents in the storage locker, authorities arrested multiple members of the criminal network over the following months.
Several cold cases were reopened.
Families who had waited for answers for decades finally learned what had happened to their loved ones.
The story spread across the country.
News stations called Jerry the dog who solved a fifteen-year mystery.
Children sent him treats.
Police officers visited just to pet him.
He even received an honorary medal from the local sheriff's department.
One evening, after all the interviews were over, I sat beside the old couch.
Jerry rested his head on my knee.
I smiled and scratched behind his ears.
"If I'd ignored you..."
I whispered.
"...none of them would have ever gotten justice."
Jerry closed his eyes peacefully.
For him, it had never been about fame.

He had simply followed the scent...
And led us straight to the truth that someone had buried for fifteen long years.
