CHAPTER 10 The Man Behind Eleanor Finally Stepped Out of the Shadows

The black sedan followed us all the way home.
Not close enough to attract attention.
Not far enough to disappear.
I noticed it first.
A dark Mercedes with government plates that somehow never appeared in traffic cameras.
When we turned toward our building, it turned.
When we stopped at a red light, it stopped.
I glanced at Ethan.
"We're being followed."
He checked the mirror.
"I see it."
Without another word, he drove past our penthouse building and headed toward the underground parking garage of Montgomery Global Headquarters instead.
The sedan continued behind us.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"They're not even trying to hide."
The security gates opened.
Armed guards recognized Ethan immediately and sealed the entrance behind us.
The black sedan rolled to a stop outside the gate.
It waited for nearly thirty seconds.
Then quietly drove away.
Neither of us relaxed.
"That wasn't Eleanor," I whispered.
"No."
Ethan stared through the windshield.
"My mother never used people like that."
The next morning, FBI Special Agent Rachel Donovan arrived before sunrise.
She looked exhausted.
"I need everyone inside."
Her tone made my stomach tighten.
Benjamin, Lucas, and Noah were still asleep upstairs.
Rachel placed a classified folder on the dining table.
"We identified the driver."
Ethan frowned.
"Who is he?"
Rachel slid a photograph across the table.
An elderly man.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
Expensive suit.
The face looked strangely familiar.
Then Ethan suddenly stood.
"I know him."
Rachel nodded.
"I thought you might."
Ethan stared at the picture.
"That's William Ashcroft."
"My father's closest friend."
"The man who practically helped raise me."
I felt cold.
William Ashcroft.
Chairman of Ashcroft Capital.
One of the wealthiest financiers in the Midwest.
A man respected by judges, governors, and presidents.
Rachel folded her hands.
"He's also the largest private shareholder outside the Montgomery family."
Ethan slowly sat back down.
"No..."
Rachel continued.
"We've spent the last twelve hours reviewing financial records seized after Eleanor's arrest."
She opened another folder.
Wire transfers.
Corporate contracts.
Offshore companies.
Hidden trusts.
Every trail eventually reached one name.
William Ashcroft.
"For nearly thirty years," Rachel said quietly, "your mother wasn't acting alone."
"She answered to someone."
Silence filled the room.
Rachel placed one final document on the table.
It was a handwritten agreement signed decades earlier.
Confidential Partnership Agreement
William Ashcroft
Eleanor Montgomery
1989
At the bottom appeared one chilling sentence.
'Control the heir. Control the company.'
Ethan's face drained of color.
"My father..."
Rachel nodded.
"We believe Charles Montgomery discovered this agreement shortly before his death."
"And when he threatened to expose it..."
She didn't finish the sentence.
She didn't have to.
At ten o'clock that morning, William Ashcroft requested a live press conference.
Every major network carried it.
He stood behind a polished podium wearing a charcoal suit and a calm smile.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he began, "the Montgomery family has suffered a tragic misunderstanding."
He spoke with effortless confidence.
"I deeply mourn the emotional accusations surrounding Mrs. Eleanor Montgomery."
Emotional accusations.
Not crimes.
Then he looked directly into the cameras.
"As for the children recently introduced to the public..."
He smiled politely.
"I sincerely hope appropriate DNA testing is conducted before anyone reaches irresponsible conclusions."
The room exploded with questions.
Reporters shouted over one another.
"Are you saying the boys aren't Ethan's?"
"Do you support Eleanor Montgomery?"
"Did you know about the hidden children?"
William simply adjusted his tie.
"I support the truth."
Then he walked away.
Benjamin turned off the television.
"Mom..."
"Why is that old man talking about us?"
Before I could answer, Noah spoke.
"He doesn't look nice."
Lucas crossed his arms.
"He looks scared."
Ethan smiled sadly.
"You're right."
Benjamin frowned.
"If he's scared..."
"Why is he pretending to smile?"
No one answered.
Because the child had noticed something every adult had missed.
William Ashcroft hadn't held that press conference to defend Eleanor.
He'd held it because he was terrified.
Terrified that seven-year-old triplets had unknowingly become the legal heirs to a fortune—and the only living witnesses capable of destroying everything he had secretly built over three decades.
At that exact moment, Rachel Donovan's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered it.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What happened?" Ethan asked.
Rachel looked him directly in the eyes.
"Our forensic team just opened a storage unit rented under one of Eleanor's shell companies."
She took a slow breath.
"Inside, they found dozens of boxes."
"What was in them?"
Rachel's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Every letter Sophia ever wrote."
"Every photograph of your sons."
"Every birthday gift you tried to send each other."
She paused.
"And one locked steel case."
Ethan swallowed hard.
"What's inside?"
Rachel met his eyes.
"We don't know yet."
"The case is marked..."
She looked down at the evidence log.
'OPEN ONLY IF WILLIAM ASHCROFT ATTEMPTS TO TAKE CONTROL.'

For the first time, Ethan didn't see his mother's betrayal as the end of the nightmare.
He realized it had only been the beginning.
