CHAPTER 5 The Bride Refused to Marry Into a Family Built on Lies

Caroline Hastings stood frozen beside the altar.
Only minutes earlier she had imagined becoming Mrs. Montgomery.
Now she felt as though she'd walked into the middle of a crime scene.
She slowly removed her engagement ring.
"Ethan..."
He couldn't even look at her.
His entire world had narrowed to three little boys standing only a few feet away.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I didn't know."
She believed him.
She really did.
Because nobody could fake that much heartbreak.
Caroline turned toward Eleanor.
"Did you know?"
Eleanor answered confidently.
"Of course."
"And you still planned this wedding?"
"It was necessary."
Caroline blinked.
"Necessary?"
"The Montgomery name cannot survive emotional weakness."
The senator's daughter looked horrified.
"My father warned me powerful families had secrets."
She laughed bitterly.
"I didn't realize the secret would be child theft."
Every camera in the garden turned toward her.
She removed her veil.
Then laid it gently across a nearby chair.
"I won't marry into this."
Reporters rushed forward.
Microphones appeared from every direction.
The senator himself walked toward his daughter.
"What happened?"
She answered loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"This wedding is over."
Then she looked directly into the television cameras.
"No amount of money is worth joining a family that separated a father from his children."
Applause broke out.
Not polite applause.
Real applause.
Many guests stood.
Others quietly walked away from the ceremony.
Within minutes, social media exploded.
BREAKING: MONTGOMERY WEDDING COLLAPSES AFTER SECRET CHILDREN REVEALED.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Stock analysts began calling each other.
Board members quietly slipped away to make emergency phone calls.
The Montgomery empire wasn't simply facing embarrassment.
It was facing financial disaster.
Meanwhile...
None of that mattered to Ethan.
He slowly crouched beside Benjamin.
"Can I..."
He swallowed hard.
"...can I hug you?"
The boys looked toward me.
I nodded.
Three small bodies threw themselves into their father's arms.
Ethan completely broke.
Years of buried loneliness poured out in uncontrollable sobs.
"I missed everything."
First steps.
First words.
Birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
School plays.
Nightmares.
Seven years that could never be returned.
Benjamin wrapped tiny arms around his neck.
"It's okay, Daddy."
"We can make new memories."
Several guests quietly wiped away tears.
Even photographers lowered their cameras.
Some moments were too human to interrupt.
I watched from a distance.
Part of me wanted to forgive him.
Another part still remembered signing divorce papers while carrying his unborn sons.
Then Ethan looked at me.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making this right."
Before I could answer...
A black SUV suddenly raced through the front gates.
Its doors flew open.
Three men wearing dark business suits stepped out.
Leading them...
Was a woman carrying a federal badge.
She walked straight toward Eleanor.
May you like
"Mrs. Montgomery."
"We need to speak with you."
