CHAPTER 6 The FBI Had Been Watching Eleanor for Months

The celebration transformed into absolute chaos.
Guests instinctively moved aside as the federal agents crossed the garden.
The lead investigator opened a leather folder.
"Eleanor Montgomery?"
She smiled confidently.
"I assume this is some misunderstanding."
The investigator didn't smile back.
"We've been investigating the Montgomery Family Foundation for eighteen months."
The color slowly left Eleanor's face.
Ethan frowned.
"What investigation?"
The agent looked toward him.
"Mr. Montgomery..."
"We believe your mother used company resources to conduct illegal surveillance, financial fraud, witness intimidation, document forgery, and obstruction of justice."
Gasps spread through the crowd.
The agent continued.
"Our investigation began after a former employee anonymously submitted evidence."
I recognized the name on the report immediately.
Margaret Lewis.
The Montgomery family's former executive assistant.
The woman Eleanor fired six years earlier after she refused to falsify accounting records.
The agent held up several documents.
"We've already obtained search warrants."
"We also recovered deleted financial records from offshore accounts."
Eleanor laughed nervously.
"You can't prove anything."
The investigator calmly removed a small digital recorder.
"Oh..."
"We already have testimony."
She pressed a button.
Eleanor's own voice echoed across the silent garden.
"If Ethan never knows about the children, the inheritance remains under my control."
Another recording followed.
"Destroy every hospital record connected to Sophia."
Another.
"Pay the investigator double. I don't care what it costs."
The garden became silent once more.
Ethan stared at his mother in disbelief.
"You..."
"You recorded yourself ordering this?"
Eleanor's confidence finally cracked.
She looked around desperately.
Searching for allies.
There were none.
Not one guest stepped forward.
Not one board member defended her.
Not even longtime family friends met her eyes.
The empire she had spent decades controlling abandoned her in less than sixty seconds.
The lead agent stepped closer.
"Eleanor Montgomery..."
"You're under arrest."
As handcuffs clicked around her wrists, Eleanor didn't look at the agents.
She didn't look at the cameras.
She looked only at Ethan.
"I did it for you."
Ethan's expression remained cold.
"No."
"You did it for yourself."
As the agents escorted Eleanor toward the waiting vehicles, Benjamin tugged gently on Ethan's sleeve.
"Daddy..."
"Does this mean Grandma was the bad guy?"
Ethan looked down at his sons, then at me.
His answer came quietly.
"It means adults sometimes make terrible choices."
"But from today forward..."
"I'm going to start making the right ones."
Neither Ethan nor anyone else noticed one elderly man quietly leaving the estate at that exact moment.
He carried a worn leather briefcase marked with the seal of the Montgomery family's oldest law firm.
Inside it was a sealed envelope labeled:
May you like
"TO BE OPENED ONLY IF ELEANOR MONTGOMERY IS REMOVED FROM CONTROL OF THE FAMILY ESTATE."
What it contained would reveal a secret even older than Ethan's marriage—and threaten the ownership of the entire Montgomery fortune.
