Chapter 1 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE KITCHEN

I came home two days early and heard my sister say:

“Let her eat garbage. A useless woman doesn’t deserve a place at our table.”

I stopped in the hallway.

My pregnant wife, Ashley, sat on a stool in the kitchen, eating cold scraps left on other people’s plates. Our five-year-old son, Samuel, chewed stale bread while trying not to cry.

My parents and sister were eating barbecue in my dining room.

Ashley saw me and stepped back.

“Please don’t be angry with me, Devin.”

That frightened me more than anything else.

A bruise circled her wrist. Two blankets were folded beside the utility-room door.

Samuel whispered, “Dad, did you know we sleep down here?”

Before I could answer, my sister Stephanie laughed.

“Tomorrow, Ashley signs the power of attorney. Then we get rid of her and the boy.”

My father added, “Once Devin signs, we transfer the company shares before he realizes what happened.”

I quietly placed my phone on the counter and began recording.

Then I entered the room.

“Ashley, take Samuel and stand behind me.”

Stephanie’s smile vanished.

“You’re home early.”

I looked at the bread in my son’s hand.

“Just in time.”

My mother claimed Ashley was too sensitive.

Stephanie admitted she had “taught her respect.”

Then Mom pointed toward Samuel.

“That boy isn’t even our blood.”

I wanted to throw them out immediately.

Instead, I said, “We’ll meet the notary tomorrow.”

My father smiled.

They thought I had surrendered.

They did not know the house legally belonged to Ashley.

They also did not know that before receiving any financial authority, each of them would have to sign a sworn disclosure confirming they had never hidden or benefited from an unauthorized company transaction.

And they had no idea Ashley had already saved the evidence they believed they had destroyed.
