Chapter 9 - ECHOES OF A NEW BEGINNINGSix months later, the spring breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine across the patio.

Inside the nursery, a soft, rhythmic lullaby played from a music box on the dresser. In my arms rested our newborn daughter, Maya, her tiny fingers curled tightly around my thumb. She had Ashley’s calm, expressive eyes and a head full of dark hair.

Samuel stood on a stepstool beside the rocking chair, peering down at his baby sister with an expression of intense, protective wonder.

"Can I hold her, Dad?" he whispered, as if afraid a loud voice might wake the world.

"Come sit right here," I guided him, adjusting his arms to cradle her safely.

Ashley leaned against the doorway, watching us with a look of complete, unconditional contentment. The shadows of the past—the cold kitchen floor, the cruel laughter in the dining room, the suffocating fear of a family that saw human beings as disposable tools—felt like a lifetime ago, faded memories from a nightmare we had successfully survived.

My phone buzzed on the side table. It was a brief notification from Attorney Harrison: the final sentencing for my father and sister had been handed down. Ten years, no parole. Their assets were completely liquidated, distributed to victims and corporate restitution funds. They were ghosts of a discarded past, powerless and forgotten.

I turned the phone over, placing it face down on the wood. I didn't care. Let the past bury itself.
