Chapter 8 - THE REBUILDINGOver the next three weeks, the legal storm raged outside our walls, but inside, our home transformed into a sanctuary of peace and healing.

Attorney Harrison dismantled my father’s corporate empire piece by piece, routing the remaining legitimate assets directly into a newly formed trust managed equally by Ashley and me. The criminal trials for my parents and sister moved with terrifying speed; the mountain of digital and physical evidence Ashley had preserved left their defense attorneys with zero maneuvering room. Facing up to fifteen years in federal prison for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment, their legal team was desperately pushing for a plea deal that would keep them behind bars for at least a decade.

We didn't attend the preliminary court hearings. We didn't need to. Our focus had shifted entirely to the future.

Ashley’s pregnancy progressed smoothly, free from the crushing stress and toxic abuse that had threatened her health. We painted Samuel’s new bedroom a bright, cheerful blue, filled his shelves with books and toys, and turned the old utility room into a spacious, sunlit pantry—a permanent reminder of darkness converted into light.

One afternoon, while sitting on the back patio watching Samuel chase butterflies across the lush green lawn, Ashley handed me a fresh cup of coffee.

"The bank just finalized the transfer of the primary residential deed," she said quietly, a small smile playing on her lips. "It’s officially registered under our names. No corporate holds. No family claims. Just us."

I took the cup, set it down on the table, and pulled her down onto my lap, wrapping my arms around her growing belly. "Good. Because I was thinking about changing the locks one more time, just to be thorough."

Ashley laughed—a warm, musical sound that I never grew tired of hearing. "I think three locks on the front door are quite enough, Devin."
