The air was crisp, carrying the unmistakable chill of an approaching autumn, but my steps remained firm and unyielding. Every ache in my joints had long since faded, replaced by the steady, enduring strength of a man who had reclaimed his life from the jaws of despair.
My phone chimed in my pocket.
I pulled it out, expecting Markus with another logistical update. Instead, it was an encrypted text message from an unknown sender.
I opened it.
Attached was a single photograph: a snapshot of the winter garden inside my mansion, taken just hours earlier through the glass ceiling. Standing right in the middle of the imported trees, holding a small silver coin left on the fountain edge, was a figure in a dark trench coat.
Beneath the photo was a single line of text:
“The king has reclaimed his throne, Caleb. But every crown casts a shadow.”
