Chapter 8 - The Harbor King RisesI lunged forward, my newly awakened legs driving me across the room with terrifying speed, but I was a fraction of a second too late.

Julian’s body shattered the glass, plummeting forty feet down into the dark, churning waters of the bay.

I reached the broken window and looked down. The freezing waves swallowed him whole, the swirling currents dragging him beneath the surface among the debris of the flooded warehouse. He didn't resurface. The harbor had reclaimed its own.

I stood there alone in the glass control room, the cold wind whipping through my hair, breathing in the scent of salt and rain.

My legs didn't shake. My muscles didn't fail.

The nightmare was finally over.

Three days later, the city newspapers buzzed with headlines of a massive criminal syndicate collapse down at Pier 49, alongside whispers that the legendary Harbor King had miraculously defied medical science and was walking the docks once more.

Back at the mansion, the winter garden was filled with sunlight.

The heavy security guards stood at a respectful distance, while soft, joyful music drifted through the glass ceiling.

Lily sat on the edge of the marble fountain, kicking her muddy sneakers back and forth as she ate a massive chocolate chip cookie. Her mother, Mrs. Hayes, stood nearby, wiping away tears of profound relief, her job, her home, and her family safe forever.

I stood by the entrance of the garden, leaning slightly on a sleek obsidian cane, my posture straight and unbroken.

Lily looked up, spotted me standing there without my wheelchair, and grinned brightly.

“See, Mr. Marino?” she called out, crumbs dusting her chin. “I told you statues can move if you tickle them right.”

A genuine, warm smile broke across my face—the first real smile I had worn in eight years.

I stepped forward into the sunlight, my boots clicking firmly against the marble floor. The Harbor King was back. But this time, he wasn't hiding behind glass walls or iron wheels.

I was ready to face whatever came next.
