Chapter 9 - Whispers in the HarborThe restoration of the Marino empire wasn't built on violence; it was built on absolute, unyielding control.

With Julian gone and the Syndicate’s local leadership dismantled by federal raids—assisted anonymously by my private security firm—the city's underworld quickly fell back in line. Every dockworker, shipping magnate, and corrupt politician knew the truth now: the Harbor King wasn't crippled, and he wasn't vulnerable.
I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in my penthouse office, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city.
Markus placed a thick manila folder on the desk. “Federal authorities wrapped up the Pier 49 incident, boss. Official report lists Julian Vance as deceased, body lost at sea. No loose ends.”
“And Mrs. Hayes?” I asked, not looking up from the documents.
“Fully taken care of,” Markus replied respectfully. “We set up a trust fund for Lily and her brother’s education. They’ll never have to worry about debt collectors again.”
“Good,” I said softly.
I opened the folder. Inside was a single old photograph recovered from Julian’s hidden safe house—a picture of Audrey, smiling brightly on a yacht, holding a small silver locket I had given her on our fifth anniversary.
For the first time in eight years, looking at her face didn't trigger the phantom paralysis in my legs. The suffocating weight of guilt had lifted, replaced by the quiet, fierce resolution to honor her memory by living fully, standing tall, and protecting those who couldn't protect themselves.
Markus lingered by the door for a moment, hesitating. “Sir... there’s one more thing. A visitor downstairs. She insists on seeing you personally.”

I raised an eyebrow. “At this hour? Who is it?”
“Detective Miller from Internal Affairs,” Markus said, his voice dropping an octave. “She’s been digging into the Syndicate’s financial ties to city hall. And she’s asking questions about what really happened at Pier 49.”
