Chapter 20 - The True King’s ReignI stopped ten feet away, resting my hand lightly on my obsidian cane. My stance was balanced, ready for whatever violence or revelation was about to unfold.

“You have good taste in gardens,” I said calmly, my voice echoing off the glass walls. “Though breaking in without an invitation usually ends poorly for my guests.”

The figure slowly turned around.

The moonlight caught her face, revealing not an assassin, not a vengeful syndicate boss, and not a ghost from the past—but Detective Miller.

She wasn't wearing her police badge. Instead, she wore a simple silver pendant identical to the one Audrey used to wear around her neck.

“It’s not breaking in, Caleb,” Miller said softly, stepping out of the shadows. “When you’re family, you already have a key.”

I stared at her, the sudden revelation freezing time itself. “Family... What are you talking about?”

Miller reached up, unclasping the silver pendant and holding it out in her palm. “Audrey wasn't an only child, Caleb. She had a younger sister who was hidden away to protect her from the very underworld you and Julian built.”

The pieces of a puzzle I never knew existed suddenly fell violently into place.

Miller wasn't an investigator chasing a conspiracy; she was blood, seeking the truth of her sister’s tragic end, testing my strength to see if I was finally worthy of protecting what remained of the Marino legacy.

I looked at the pendant, then up at Miller, a slow, profound understanding settling over my chest.

“You didn't come to arrest me that day in my office,” I said quietly. “You came to see if the Harbor King was strong enough to protect us both.”

Miller offered a faint, approving smile, sliding the pendant back into her coat pocket.

“And you passed, Caleb,” she replied softly. “The kingdom is yours. Just make sure you never lock the doors again.”

I nodded, looking past her toward the open glass doors of the garden, where the cool night breeze blew freely in from the city.

The wheelchair was gone. The shadows were cleared. And for the first time in eight years, the Harbor King stood not in isolation, but surrounded by the legacy he was finally strong enough to carry.

What do you think Caleb and Miller will do next to protect their family from future threats?
