Chapter 3 - Ashes of the EmpireThe fire didn’t just consume the Cárdenas family home; it devoured their entire existence in less than two hours.

By the time the local fire department arrived—delayed by a series of mysteriously blocked intersections miles away—there was nothing left of the sprawling estate except a smoking skeleton of charred timber and blackened stone.

Raúl, Rebeca, Sebastián, and Nora stood out on the dusty road in their pajamas, watching their life’s work turn to ash.

Sebastián, his arm now wrapped in a crude makeshift sling from where it had been nearly dislocated, was trembling with blind fury and shock. He pulled out his phone to call their lawyer, their bankers, their powerful friends in the local government.

He tapped his contacts and dialed.

“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”

He tried another.

“This subscriber has been blocked from accessing this network.”

“What is going on?!” Sebastián screamed, throwing his phone against a charred fence post. “Answer me! Who does that old man think he is?!”

Raúl slumped onto a dry rock by the roadside, staring blankly at his trembling hands. The invincible patriarch of the Cárdenas family had vanished, replaced by a broken, helpless old man.

“Mateo Silva,” Raúl whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. “I... I should have known.”

Rebeca turned on her husband, her face twisted in hysteria. “What are you talking about?! Who is Mateo Silva? Why didn’t you protect us?!”

“He’s not just a businessman, Rebeca,” Raúl choked out, a tear carving a clean path through the soot on his cheek. “Twenty years ago, he ruled the entire industrial corridor of the north. He stepped away from the public eye, retreated into finance, and protected his privacy fiercely. People said he had a daughter who married against his wishes... a daughter who eloped with a broke, ordinary man who wanted nothing to do with the Silva empire.”

Sebastián froze. He slowly turned his head toward his father. “What... what are you saying?”

“Camila,” Raúl muttered. “Camila isn’t some penniless orphan we picked up off the street. She’s the only heir to the Silva fortune.”

The silence that followed was heavier than the smoke hanging in the air.

Sebastián’s legs gave out. He dropped to his knees in the dirt, the realization crashing over him with the force of a tidal wave. For two years, he had treated a billionaire’s daughter like a slave, beaten her, mocked her, humiliated her—and worst of all, recorded it for the world to see.

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up beside them. The tinted window rolled down, revealing the cold, sharp face of Mateo Silva’s chief legal counsel, a sharp-suited woman named Valeria Garza.

Valeria didn’t bother stepping out of the car. She looked down at the ruined family through her designer sunglasses.

“Raúl Cárdenas?” she asked, her voice entirely devoid of warmth.

Raúl scrambled forward, pressing his hands against the car window. “Please! Tell Mr. Silva it was a mistake! We can negotiate! We can pay for the medical bills—!”

Valeria cut him off by tossing a thick manila folder out the window. It landed in the dirt at Raúl’s feet.

“Those are the asset-freezing orders signed by the federal high court an hour ago,” Valeria said smoothly. “Every bank account, every vehicle title, every commercial property, and every hidden asset belonging to the Cárdenas family has been seized under charges of domestic terrorism, extortion, and human rights violations.”

“You can’t do that!” Sebastián roared, lunging toward the car. “We have rights! We’ll sue you! We’ll fight you in court!”

Valeria gave a cold, pitying smile.

“With what money, Mr. Cárdenas? Your credit cards were declined five minutes ago. Your utility accounts were terminated. Even your cousins in the municipal government have already handed in their resignations to distance themselves from your sinking ship.”

She rolled the window back up, leaving the family standing alone in the dust.

As the sedan sped away, a police cruiser finally pulled up. But it wasn't there to offer help. Two officers stepped out, walking directly toward Sebastián and Raúl with handcuffs swinging from their belts.

“Raúl Cárdenas. Sebastián Cárdenas,” the lead officer said, reading from a warrant. “You are under arrest for domestic abuse, assault, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent.”

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Sebastián’s wrists, he looked up at the smoking ruins of his home and realized the nightmare had only just begun.
