Chapter 1

Lucía Ferrer woke up beneath the harsh white lights of the intensive care unit in a private hospital in Monterrey, suffering from three broken ribs, a split lip, and an unbearable pain every time she tried to breathe.
The last thing she remembered was the kitchen of her home in San Pedro.
Rodrigo Salgado, her husband of six years, had demanded that she stop questioning certain transfers made through his company.
When Lucía refused, the charming businessman dropped his mask.
Then the beating began.
When the paramedics arrived, Rodrigo spoke with flawless composure.
“My wife fell again,” he said calmly.
“She’s been so absent-minded lately.”
For years, he had followed the same pattern.
First, he isolated her.
Then he humiliated her.
Afterward, he apologized with roses, expensive jewelry, and lavish dinners.
And he always reminded her that her parents adored him—and that no one would ever believe such a respected man could treat his wife that way.
With trembling hands, Lucía reached for her phone and called her mother, Estela.
She explained that she was in intensive care, that Rodrigo hadn't caused an accident, and that she needed a safe place to stay once she was discharged from the hospital.
Estela remained silent.
Then she spoke with a coldness that hurt even more than Lucía’s broken ribs.
“You chose this marriage.
Don’t drag us into your drama.”
Lucía begged to stay at her parents’ house for just a few days.
Then her father, Ernesto, took the phone.
“This Friday we're closing on the new house in Valle Poniente.
We can't risk the deal because of your problems.
Go back to Rodrigo and work things out like a grown woman.”
Only three months earlier, Estela and Ernesto had stood before Lucía in tears, begging her to co-sign their mortgage.
Their credit history was terrible, and without Lucía's financial guarantee, the bank would never have approved the loan.
The $55,000 deposit was completely non-refundable.
Something inside Lucía quietly died.
“All right,” she whispered.
“I understand now.”
Her parents believed she had given in.
Rodrigo believed she would remain the quiet wife who prepared financial statements, corrected contracts, and then stepped aside so he could receive all the applause.
What neither of them knew was that Lucía had built the entire financial structure of Salgado Consultores and legally owned 38% of the company's shares through corporate agreements Rodrigo had never bothered to read.
Lucía called her attorney, Valeria Montes.
“Do you want a restraining order?” Valeria asked.
“I want everything.”
Less than an hour later, Valeria formally notified the bank and withdrew Lucía's guarantee.
That same afternoon, her parents' mortgage financing collapsed, and their $55,000 deposit was forfeited.
Estela called 17 times.
Rodrigo called 23 times.
Lucía answered neither.
Instead, she opened an encrypted folder labeled:
INSURANCE • TAXES • TRANSFERS
Inside were contracts, suspicious financial transactions, insurance policies, and copies of signatures she had been quietly collecting for years on instinct.
She ordered every corporate transaction requiring her authorization to be frozen.
At exactly 11:42 p.m., Rodrigo's corporate credit card was declined, and a multi-million-peso bank transfer was automatically blocked.
Then Lucía opened an insurance policy that had been modified just two weeks earlier.
The digital signature looked exactly like hers.
But it wasn't.
It had been forged.
And the primary beneficiary wasn't Rodrigo.
It was Estela—
her own mother.
Before Lucía could even process what she was seeing, a video call appeared on her screen.
Rodrigo's face filled the display.
There were no flowers.
No smile.
None of the caring husband's gentle voice.
“Lucía,” he said coldly,
“Delete that folder.
Right now.”
Lucía felt the air leave her lungs.
Rodrigo was watching every file she opened...
in real time.
