Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT OF RECKONINGThe storm over Monterrey was vicious. Torrential rain lashed against the windows of Lucía’s penthouse in San Pedro. The power to the building had been cut, leaving the ultra-luxury residential tower shrouded in darkness.

Lucía walked through the spacious living room, illuminated only by flashes of lightning outside.

She wasn't running. She wasn't hiding.

She knew Rodrigo would come here. This was where he held absolute control over her for six years. This was where he believed he owned her.

A soft, metallic click echoed from the private elevator foyer.

The doors slid open.

A tall shadow stepped into the living room. Rodrigo was drenched in rain, his suit wrinkled, his hair wild, and his eyes bloodshot with pure venom. In his right hand, he held a dark metal object.

A gun.

"I knew you'd be here," Rodrigo said, his voice low and guttural. "You always were predictable, Lucía. You think you're so smart with your contracts and your ledgers. But at the end of the day, you're still just the weak little girl I dragged out of her mediocre life."

Lucía stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the city below. She didn't flinch.

"You took everything from me," Rodrigo growled, pacing toward her, the gun raised. "My company. My money. My reputation. My father-in-law is in prison. My name is ruined across Mexico. All because you couldn't just keep your mouth shut and be a good wife!"

"You took six years of my life, Rodrigo," Lucía said softly, turning to face him. "You broke three of my ribs. You cracked my skull. You made me believe I was nothing."

"You ARE nothing!" Rodrigo roared, stepping within five feet of her, pressing the cold barrel of the gun directly against her forehead. "You're a corpse that hasn't realized it's dead yet! Do you think anyone cares about you now? Your parents are rotters in a cell! Your friends fled years ago! You're alone, Lucía!"

Lucía looked directly into the barrel of the gun, then up into Rodrigo’s wild, manic eyes.

A slow, terrifying smile spread across her face.

"I'm not alone, Rodrigo," she whispered. "Look at your chest."

Rodrigo frowned, looking down.

A tiny red laser dot was hovering precisely over his heart. Then another. And another.

Three red laser sights from tactical rifles beamed through the high-rise windows, pinning him from neighboring rooftops.

"What..." Rodrigo stammered, his hand trembling.

"You really thought I came here alone?" Lucía asked, taking a step toward him, forcing the barrel of his gun back. "You thought you were the predator? Rodrigo, I bought this entire building three days ago. The security team, the power grid, the cameras... they belong to me."

The double doors of the service entrance exploded inward.

"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPON!"

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers from the Fuerza Civil swarmed the penthouse, guns raised, flashlights blinding the room.

Rodrigo panicked. He raised his weapon to fire at Lucía—

BANG.

A single counter-sniper shot shattered the exterior window pane, striking Rodrigo in the right shoulder.

The gun flew from his hand, spinning across the marble floor. Rodrigo screamed in agony, falling to his knees as blood soaked his shirt.

Tactical officers tackled him to the floor, slamming his face into the shattered glass, pulling his arms violently behind his back to apply the cuffs.

Lucía stood over him, looking down at the man who had terrified her for so long.

Rodrigo writhed on the floor, weeping in pain and humiliation. "Lucía... please... tell them to stop... I love you... you know I love you..."

Lucía slowly knelt beside him. She leaned down to his ear, her voice barely a whisper above the storm outside.

"Love doesn't bleed, Rodrigo," she said softly. "You taught me that."

She stood up, turned her back on him, and walked out of the penthouse, leaving him sobbing in his own blood as the police dragged him away into the dark.
