Chapter 2 - THE ENCRYPTED TRAPThe blue light of the phone screen illuminated Lucía’s pale, bruised face as Rodrigo’s voice cut through the silent ICU room like a razor blade.

"Delete that folder. Right now."
Lucía’s heart hammered against her fractured ribs. A sharp, searing pain shot through her chest, but for the first time in six years, fear did not paralyze her. Rage took its place.
"You're watching my screen," Lucía whispered, her voice raspy from the oxygen mask she had taken off just moments before. "You installed spyware on my phone."
Rodrigo let out a cold, amused chuckle over the video call. He was sitting in his leather executive chair in their San Pedro penthouse, sipping a glass of Macallan.
"I control everything you see, everything you touch, and every peso you think you own, Lucía," he said, leaning closer to his camera. His eyes were void of any warmth. "You think cancelling your parents' mortgage guarantee was a power move? You just ruined your mother's life. And if you don’t hand over the master keys to Salgado Consultores by midnight, I will make sure the doctors in that hospital misplace your medical charts."
Lucía gripped the edge of the hospital bed. "My mother forged my signature on a three-million-dollar life insurance policy, didn't she? You two planned this together."
Rodrigo didn't deny it. He simply smiled. "Estela needed the Valle Poniente house to cover her gambling debts in Macao. I needed a clean exit strategy from the tax audit coming next month. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. You were worth more to us dead than alive, Lucía. But you survived the fall down the stairs. A minor miscalculation on my part."
A fall down the stairs. That was his official story to the police.
"I'm not deleting anything," Lucía said, her tone dropping to an icy calm that caught Rodrigo off guard. "In fact, I'm pressing 'Send'."
"Send to whom?" Rodrigo’s smile faltered slightly.
"To the Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT) and the Federal Prosecutor's Office," Lucía replied.
What Rodrigo didn't realize was that Valeria Montes, her high-stakes corporate attorney, was sitting outside the ICU in a parked SUV. The moment Rodrigo hijacked Lucía’s screen, Valeria’s cybersecurity team initiated a reverse-trace protocol.
"You think you're the only one who knows how to use software, Rodrigo?" Lucía continued, staring directly into the lens. "I built the backend infrastructure of your entire firm. You only knew how to sell the dream. I built the vault. And I just locked you out."
Before Rodrigo could reply, his screen flashed red. A system-wide security breach notification popped up on his desktop.
At that exact moment, the ICU door swung open. It wasn't a nurse.
It was Estela.
Lucía’s mother rushed into the room, her designer handbag clutching her chest like a shield. Her eyes were red, but not from crying for her daughter. They were red from fury.
"Lucía, what have you done?!" Estela shrieked, ignoring the heart monitor that began to beep rapidly. "The bank just seized our savings account! The deposit on Valle Poniente is gone! Your father is having an angina attack in the car!"
Lucía looked at the woman who had carried her for nine months—the woman who had bargained away her life for a luxury address.
"Get out, Estela," Lucía said softly.
"How dare you call me Estela?!" her mother spat, stepping closer to the bed. "We raised you! We gave you everything! Rodrigo is a good man who built a life for you! So what if he loses his temper occasionally? Men of his stature have pressure! You are destroying this family over a few bruises!"
"He tried to kill me," Lucía said, every word dripping with lethal clarity. "And you signed the paper that paid him to do it."
Estela froze. The color drained from her face as she looked at the phone screen on the bed, which was still displaying the encrypted life insurance file bearing her forged signature.
"You... you don't understand..." Estela stammered, stepping back.
"I understand completely," Lucía said.
Suddenly, the ICU lights flickered. The digital heart monitor connected to Lucía’s chest suddenly went dark. The electronic door lock clicked from the outside.
The room was locked. And the air conditioning system began to hum with a strange, heavy chemical scent.
Through the glass window of the ICU door, a figure in a gray medical scrub stepped into view, holding a remote override device.

It wasn't a hospital worker.
It was Rodrigo’s private driver.
