Chapter 16 - The Siege on Thorne Estate

"Let... go..." I gasped, my fingers clawing at Evelyn’s wrist.
Evelyn tightened her grip on my throat, pressing the cold steel barrel of the pistol directly against my rounded belly.
"Two years ago," Evelyn hissed, her breath smelling of stale tobacco and hatred, "I offered you a quiet exit. You could have signed the papers and walked away. But you insisted on ruining my family. You destroyed my son. You took my wealth."
"You... destroyed... yourself..." I choked out, staring back into her eyes without showing a single shred of fear.
"It doesn't matter anymore," Evelyn smiled, her thumb flicking the safety switch off the gun. "In ten seconds, the Thorne bloodline ends forever."
"EVELYN!" a voice screamed from the grand entrance of the foyer.
Evelyn froze. She turned her head slightly toward the doorway.
Standing in the doorway, soaked in rain, holding a police-issued Glock, was Reid.
Beside him stood Detective Walsh and a squad of tactical SWAT officers with lasers targeted directly on Evelyn’s chest.
"Put the gun down, Mom!" Reid screamed, his voice cracking with pure agony. "Put it down!"
Evelyn stared at her son in utter shock. "Reid? What are you doing? How did you get out?"
"I brought them here!" Reid cried out, taking a step forward into the foyer. "I told them about the ventilation valve! I told them everything!"
Evelyn’s face contorted into pure disgust. "You coward... You betrayed your own mother for her?"
"She was my wife!" Reid wept, tears streaming down his face as he aimed his gun at the woman who had given him life. "She loved me! She tried to build a family with me, and you made me destroy her! You made me stab her!"
"She was a tool!" Evelyn shrieked. "She was an incubator for our money!"
"No, Mom," Reid said, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You were the parasite."

Evelyn’s eyes burned with insane fury. "If I can't have this family... NO ONE CAN!"
Evelyn pulled her gun away from my stomach and aimed it directly at my head.
