The afternoon sun shone like molten gold over the rolling green hills of the Thorne Estate outside Nashville.
The old house had been completely renovated—the dark marble and cold security shutters were gone, replaced by sprawling glass windows, open gardens, white roses, and children's playground sets.
Six-year-old Leo and Maya were chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawn, their laughter echoing through the warm summer air like music.
I stood on the back patio wearing a simple linen dress, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea.
Sarah Vance walked out onto the patio, holding a tablet. "Mara, the international board just ratified the merger. You are officially heading the largest real estate and philanthropic conglomerate in North America."
I smiled, taking a sip of my tea. "Thank you, Sarah. Send the executive team bonuses, and shut down the office for the weekend. Everyone deserves to be with their families."
"Right away, CEO," Sarah grinned, turning back inside the house.
I walked down the stone steps into the grass.
Leo ran up to me, hugging my legs tightly. "Mommy! Look! Maya found a butterfly!"
Maya ran up beside him, holding out a tiny blue butterfly resting gently on her hand. "Look, Mommy! It’s beautiful!"
I knelt down on the grass, wrapping my arms around both of my children, pulling them close to my heart.
I looked up at the clear blue sky.
I remembered the white tile floor in my kitchen six years ago. I remembered the cold blade, the blood, the betrayal, and the terrifying darkness that had threatened to consume my life.
