Chapter 6 - The Unspoken BloodlineFive days after the attack, I was moved out of the ICU into a private, high-security wing of the hospital.

armed guards stood outside my door twenty-four hours a day.
Sitting beside my bed was Sarah Vance—not Arthur Vance, the corporate liar, but his younger sister, Sarah, who was the top probate and forensic litigation attorney in Tennessee.
Sarah placed a thick leather-bound binder on my lap.
"Mara," Sarah said gently, her voice full of deep empathy. "I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through. But you need to see this."
I opened the folder with trembling fingers. Inside were historical deeds, corporate registry filings from thirty years ago, and personal letters.
"What is this?" I asked.
"Thirty years ago," Sarah explained, "your father, Julian Thorne, was equal partners with Arthur Whitmore Sr.—Reid's father. Together, they founded Thorne-Whitmore Realty."
I looked at the old photographs. My father, young and smiling, standing next to a younger Arthur Whitmore Sr.
"When your father died four years ago," Sarah continued, "Evelyn Whitmore forged a secondary corporate charter that effectively erased Julian’s legal ownership, absorbing his 50% stake into her personal holdings. She thought she had buried the truth forever."
"That’s why she was so horrified when Reid brought me home three years ago," I realized, the fog finally clearing from my mind. "She wasn't angry because I was a 'nobody' from a modest background... She was terrified because she recognized my face."
"She recognized your legal claim," Sarah corrected. "Evelyn knew that if you ever audited the company's historical books—which you were qualified to do as a financial analyst—you would discover that 50% of the entire Whitmore estate was legally yours."
"So she forced Reid to marry me," I whispered. "To keep me close. To keep me quiet."
"And when you started asking questions six months ago about the missing security footage and company books," Sarah said, "Evelyn realized you were getting too close. When you got pregnant with twins, it meant your children would automatically inherit the entire undivided estate upon turning eighteen. Evelyn faced total financial ruin and prison."
I touched the bandage across my stomach.
The physical pain was dull now, replaced by a cold, incandescent fury that burned deep inside my marrow.
They had taken my career. They had tried to take my sanity. They had taken my two unborn children.
"Sarah," I said, looking up at her with clear, unwavering eyes. "What happens to Whitmore Commercial Real Estate now?"
"With Evelyn and Reid facing criminal indictments, the corporate board has suspended all family voting rights," Sarah smiled grimly. "As Julian Thorne’s sole legal heir, you have filed an emergency petition for receivership. As of eight o'clock this morning, the court appointed you as the sole managing conservator of all Whitmore assets."
"I own the company?"
"You own the company, the headquarters building, the land developments, the bank accounts, and the Whitmore family mansion," Sarah said. "Reid and Evelyn have literally nothing left. They cannot even pay their bail."
A quiet knock came at the door. Detective Walsh walked in, holding a tablet.
"Mara," Walsh said. "Sloane Mercer’s attorney just contacted the DA. She wants to turn state's evidence against Evelyn Whitmore in exchange for a plea deal. But she has one condition."
"What condition?" I asked.
"She wants to speak with you directly," Walsh said. "She says she has information about Evelyn that isn't in any financial file. Information about your father's death."

My heart stopped for a second. "My father died of a sudden stroke four years ago."
Detective Walsh looked at me gravely. "According to Sloane... it wasn't a stroke."
