Chapter 17 - The Final Betrayal

BANG!

A gunshot deafened the room.

A heavy body slammed violently into me, knocking me sideways onto the soft carpet.

I squeezed my eyes shut, holding my stomach, waiting for the cold sting of death. But the pain didn't come.

I opened my eyes.

Reid was lying on top of me, shielding my body with his own. Blood was rapidly blooming across the back of his orange prison jumpsuit. He had thrown his body across the hallway to block the bullet meant for my head.

"REID!" I gasped.

Evelyn stood frozen, staring at her son lying in a pool of his own blood. "Reid...?"

Before she could react, Detective Walsh squeezed the trigger of her rifle.

BANG! BANG!

Two heavy tactical rounds struck Evelyn Whitmore squarely in the chest. The force of the impact lifted her off her feet, throwing her backward over the second-story marble railing.

She fell thirty feet, crashing through the glass coffee table in the center of the grand foyer below, landing motionless amidst a sea of shattered glass.

Silence fell over the estate, broken only by the sound of heavy rain pounding against the roof and the crackle of police radios.

I turned Reid over in my arms. He was breathing heavily, blood spilling from his mouth.

"Mara..." Reid whispered, coughing weakly as he looked up into my eyes. "Are... are the babies okay?"

I pressed my hands against my stomach. I felt two strong, frantic kicks from inside.

"They're okay, Reid," I wept, tears streaming down my face as I held the man who had once tried to destroy me, but had ultimately sacrificed his life to save me. "They're alive."

Reid smiled softly, a tear escaping the corner of his eye. "I'm sorry... Mara... I'm so sorry for everything..."

His eyes rolled back, and his head went limp in my lap.

"MEDIC!" Detective Walsh screamed, rushing down the hallway toward us. "WE NEED AN AMBULANCE NOW!"

Suddenly, a sharp, searing pain tore through my lower abdomen. A warm rush of fluid soaked through my clothes.

I gasped, clutching my belly as another massive contraction hit me like a physical blow.

"Rowan..." I choked out, grabbing Walsh's sleeve. "My water broke... The babies are coming!"
