Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle CrumblesWhile the arrests unfolded across the city, the news broke across national media like a tidal wave.

BREAKING NEWS: NASHVILLE REAL ESTATE DYNASTY COLLAPSES IN ACCUSATIONS OF ATTEMPTED MURDER AND EMBEZZLEMENT REID WHITMORE ARRESTED FOR STABBING PREGNANT WIFE; MOTHER EVELYN WHITMORE CHARGED WITH MASTERMINDING CONSPIRACY

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the corporate headquarters of Whitmore Commercial Real Estate was surrounded by FBI agents executing search warrants. Federal marshals carried out boxes of financial ledgers, hard drives, and legal filings.

Inside the Nashville County Jail, Reid Whitmore sat in a holding cell, staring at his hands.

The white dress shirt he had worn to the hospital was gone, replaced by an orange jumpsuit. The bruise under his eye had turned a sickening shade of deep purple.

The heavy steel door slid open, and Detective Rowan Walsh walked in, placing a recorder on the small metal table.

"I don't want to talk," Reid muttered, his voice hollow. "My new attorney said not to say anything."

"Your new attorney is a public defender, Reid," Detective Walsh said, sitting across from him. "Because all of your family's assets, personal accounts, and corporate funds have been frozen by the Department of Justice under the RICO Act."

Reid slowly raised his head. "Frozen? What are you talking about? My family has millions!"

"Your family has nothing," Walsh corrected coldly. "Every dollar in the Whitmore corporate accounts was stolen from your late father-in-law's estate, Julian Thorne. Your mother didn't just manipulate you into hating Mara, Reid. She used you as an unwitting pawn to cover up a hundred-million-dollar financial fraud."

Reid stared at her, blinking rapidly. "No... no. Mom loved me. She did everything for me."

"Your mother viewed you as a vessel," Walsh replied. She pressed play on her laptop, pulling up the recorded confession from Sloane Mercer.

Reid listened in stunned silence as Sloane’s voice filled the cell: "Evelyn forced Reid to pursue Mara, to romance her, to marry her! The goal was always to get Mara pregnant, control the trust through the children, and then quietly eliminate Mara..."

Reid shook his head frantically, pulling at his hair. "No! No! Sloane is lying! Sloane loved me! She came to me because Mara attacked her!"

"Sloane was receiving a $15,000 monthly consulting stipend directly from your mother's secret Cayman account," Walsh laid down the financial receipts. "Sloane was never going to marry you, Reid. Once Mara was dead and the trust was transferred, Evelyn had arranged for Sloane to take a $5 million settlement and move to London. You were going to take the fall for manslaughter while your mother ran the trust."

Reid’s chest heaved. He looked at the documents, at the voice logs, at the cold, unassailable proof that every aspect of his life—his marriage, his career, his mistress, his mother’s love—was a carefully constructed lie designed to exploit the woman he had just stabbed.

"My... my babies..." Reid gasped, tears finally streaming down his face. "Mara was pregnant?"

"She was carrying twins," Walsh said, showing no mercy. "A boy and a girl, according to the ultrasound pathology report. They died because you drove a six-inch steel blade into your wife's abdomen because another woman scratched her own arm with a sewing needle."

Reid let out an animalistic howl of pain and horror. He fell forward onto the concrete floor, beating his fists against the stone, sobbing hysterically.

"I killed them..." he screamed, his voice shattering against the walls. "I killed my own babies! I killed my children!"

"You didn't just kill them, Reid," Detective Walsh said, standing up and looking down at him with utter disgust. "You destroyed yourself for two women who treated you like a dog on a leash. And now, Mara owns everything."
